Well I am hooking up my X1 to my Samsung 1080p HD TV and for some reason sound is becoming a problem. At first no sound would transfer threw the cable at all... but then I found the Realtek HD Audio Manager. In here there's a section for Digital Sound... which I would presume is for HDMI... but its not. I test sounds out under this section and no sound comes from either my TV (with surround sound) or PC. But I can get to Audio Devices by Right Clicking the Realtek icon and see my TV with NVIDIA HDMI OUTPUT. From here I can turn it on so sound comes from my surround sound but its stereo sound only... no options anywhere for surround sound. Am I missing something here? Thanks.

Nvidia doesn't do more than 2 channel sound via HDMI, only Ati provide this functionality currently. I believe the newer GT1xx Nvidia cards may change this. But you will only get Stereo with HDMI, Surround using SPDIF.

hmm, Is this because of a hardware limitation or software limitation?

That's strange... It has DOLBY SURROUND Options everywhere... I just don't get sound. If it ONLY supports stereo.. why would they have a Digital Output section that lets you select 5.1 Surround Sound.

The laptop supports 5.1. The nVidia card only outputs 2 channels through the HDMI port. Its has nothing to do with the capabilities of the laptops sound chip.

So how can I get 5.1 sound out of it? I even tried hooking it up via analog (headphone jack converter to red and white audio) directly to my receiver and no luck.

Well if you wanting to play a game you can use the HDMI port for the video and then use the SPDIF port for the sound. When you plug in a SPDIF cable into the headphone jack then plug the other end into your reciever. To get mine to work that way I used a cable like this. http://www.av-cable.net/digitalaudio/digital-audio.html

Well I tried to hook up an audio splitter using the headphone jack. (Splits headphone to Red and White audio) and then hooked that up to my receiver but no 5.1 sound. Music seems to come from all speakers but actual voices and sound effects only come from left and right speaker.

You have to ues a cable that supports 5.1 if you want 5.1 audio. The rca spliter will only give you stereo sound. If you hook up a TOSLINK digital audio cable like in the link I provided in my last post and enable dolby digital audio you should be fine. That is the setup that works for me.

The ebay one is similar to the one I have. It should work fine. It took me a little bit of mucking around in the sound settings to make it work. But it was not to difficult. Then you can output to a big screen TV and have 5.1 audio as well. I played some crysis warhead with that settup and it was great.

    Have Fun!

Yup I am trying to get it to give me 5.1 sound for FEAR 2, CRYSIS and my weekly Anime. I hook it up to my 52 inch Samsung LCD with HDMI but we all know you get Stereo sound (which I think is pretty stupid for HDMI) but luckily the cord was $5 and I should be getting it by the end of the week. I can wait till then. ^_^

    Thanks guys.

Hey guys - that Ebay link is dead now that it ended. Im looking for the same cable - can someone post a link that is still good? Id like to see what this cable looks like and the associated naming so that I can get my hands on one.

Thanks. Guess that should have been obvious.

That cable sure doesnt look like it plugs into a headphone jack. Now Im really confused. Im looking at the Alienware m15x, which has 5.1/7.1 surround sound. The only output jack is the headphone jack.

Does that mean it takes both a standard headphone cable and the mini toslink cable in the same port?
