Went to a local Best Buy in the Bay Area and saw the Asus G50vm-X1 box in their inventory cage.

    The specs were

    Nvidia 9700M GT
    200GB HD 7,200 RPM

    No, it needs a T9400 or a P9500.
Did you happen to see the battery stats? With a 9700M GT I would hope it has an 8/9-cell. Sounds like an amazing price though.

BB is getting diluted spec models to sell to the American public who doesn't know any better, through an existing agreement with Asus who wants to get their foot in the door at B&M stores to compete with Dell, HP etc in the American market. It's been happening that way since they got their first "exclusive" version of the G1 late last year.

Resellers will get the true-spec'd models when Asus NA releases them.

lol those specs seem perfect for me, 4 gigs ram 200gb 7200rpm HD and a 9700gt for under $1,300. Sure the CPU is a little crippled but its still powerful enough that it wont be bottle necking anything

It wasn't on display, but they are available to purchase. You just have to go down to the local Best Buy store and tell them to check their inventory cages. Half of them don't even know they have it yet.

Was the 9700m GT Gddr2 or Gddr3. Also how does the 9700 gt compare to the 9700 GTS being used in the toshibas.

I'm pretty sure all 9700gt's are gddr3 and i think it is a little better than the 8700gt. the 9700gts is between the 8800gts and the 8700gt

damnnnn i was hoping it would be silver or black...o well still the best 15" laptop i've found so far except for the fact that it probably barely gets 2 hours of battery life.Ouch that processor is alot worse than i thought, it's ancient

From the specs listed on the Best Buy website, it says that the G50 weighs 6.2 lbs. and measures 1.3" thin for portable power. Although slightly heavier than the M50, it seems thinner. :)

It's likely to be quite a while (probably several months) - BB buys these in bulk from Asus and isn't going to keep multiple versions of the same notebook on their books.

Depending on how it sells initially, BB could place another order and then get whatever Asus will make for them under their exclusivity, diluted-spec contract. The BB version of the G1 is history for that all happening.

I am new to the forum and PC games in general. I have been contemplating buying a gaming laptop over the past couple months. The models that I have been considering is the Gateway P-6860fx and the new Asus G50Vm-X1 because they are the least expensive.

I like the styling and weight of the Asus, but since it's so new there hasn't been any reviews that I can find. The flip side is that the Gateway has gotten pretty good reviews, but everyone is saying that you should swap out the cpu (+$350)and the size and weight make it a lil less portable. The price difference between the two is $100 bucks. Unfortunately, I had missed out on Best Buy's Gateway sale when it was $1050.00. I was actually in the store to buy it during the sale, but that they took soooo long that I left.

Any thoughts on which one is better? Is the Asus cpu upgradeable too? Thanks for the help.

Its a good price, but it reminds me of that infamous gateway laptop that was focused on the 8800 card but with everything else kinda crappy.

Atleast this has a good chasis, but that gateway had a low cpu, bad screen, low hdd, ect.

This model seems to follow suite, the screen is a really low res, the HDD is pretty small my new high end standards, and the cpu is slow (tho I dont mind this as I would gladly take the slowest cpu for cheap or no cpu at all so I can put the 2.8ghz model in there myself)

wonder how the real version of this is gonna be from our resellers. I think they are under NDA still or just dont even have them yet so gotta wait and see.

While i agree the processor is very slow compared to whats out now, i think the screen resolution would fit well with the graphics card. If its more of a mid-ranged card, i'd rather the native resolution was a bit lower for a better framerate.
My only beef with it is the processor, and if i can upgrade that myself fairly easily, I'm all for it. but we'll have to see what the resellers release first.

It's perfect and exactly what I have been waiting for besides the processor and screen. It would be nice if the resellers could provide some info. A P9500 and a WXGA+ or WSXGA+ would have me sold.

Resellers are likely under a NDA about this right now. I'm curious if the screen is LED or not and if the processor is upgradable. Might be an option.

Anyone game enough to buy it now and give us a first-hand impression? How's best buy's return policy? :p

I want to know how the lower resolution 16:9 display looks since it's not very common and hopefully will be good. (crosses fingers) I am also concerned about heat, noise, and build quality. Are they purposely designing it so it looks like something you would leave in your garage? Too automobile-ish...

    the screen is not LED but the screen is a true 15.6 16 x 9 aspect ratio. 15.4 is 16 x 10.

It runs a 6000 3d mark at its native resolution and around 6700 3d mark at a 1024 x 768 resolution. It also has a numeric keypad which is nice for some number crunching on the side or in a classroom.

I don't think anyone here or "in the know" will buy an Asus from Best Buy. All Asus notebooks purchased from BB does not include the 1 year accidental damage protection nor the 2 year global warranty.

I had a pleasure to play with it at BestBuy and here my thoughts:

Very nice design, might be too flashy (in terms of looks and LED usage: sides, touchpad, panel etc..) for a professional, but for a gamer it's very nice.

Build quality is outstanding, it doesn't feel like a cheapo plasticy notebook (like Dell & HP sitting nearby)
Plastic quality is really nice, although I don't like black glosiness at the top which is a huge fingerprint magnet, but wrist areas are all ribbed plastics which is how all notebooks should be.

Heat: it was idling probably all day and it was really cool to the touch, there is a huge intake at the bottom of the laptop for the graphics card.

It's really attractive price for this laptop, but the CPU is really low end...

Btw, I also got to check out Sony FW (non HiColor model) and while it had nice keyboard and very solid build quality, I thought the size was a bit large for my taste even.

klas, did you happen to see if the battery was a 6-cell or a 9-cell/(something bigger than a 6-cell)?? Also, there are LED's on the front right?like the G70?. And also if it had bluetooth or not?

    Thanks!

So if given a choice which would be the better buy Asus g50vm-x1 or the Gateway 6860fx? Just for the record Best Buy charges a 15% restock fee for any opened laptops. The accidental replacement warranty is $350. Thats the only reason why I didn't just buy it and check it out.

I'll try to answer your questions, but I was mostly checking out the design, build quality and screen quality.

If I had to guess I would say it would've been 6 cell battery (it wasn't in the laptop), LEDs are on the sides of the LCD screen, around touchpad, logo, as well as on the front lid. There was no mention of bluetooth nor did I see it in the specs either.

I didn't see any mention of ExpressGate, which is important for me to have.

its because it is 15.6" and not 15.4", giving it a true widescreen aspect ratio and making the resolution different than usual

I think this will sell out very quickly if it has 2 hour+ battery life and the ability to manually upgrade to a newer montevina cpu since i think the chipset can handle it
