Yea I guess your right. If I had an extra 400 dollars I'd get the g50 instead of the basic m50. I personally think the orange and black looks pimpin. When is it supposed to start shipping and when will bencmarks come out?

HI! for those that own and or have played with the X1, how is the heat and noise? I looked and looked,,,,it's a sweet package, light and compact, but with a 9700GT in there and all the light stuff.....is this beast quiet or reasonable cool at all?

The NVS 140M is a much lower performing graphics card than the 9700M GT.

Well I messed with the one at BB for about 30 minutes. I must have looked rather strange eying it down at every angle, lifting it up for weight all that stuff.

It was light, it ran cool. However I couldnt really test it all that was on it is the Asus software and the stock windows stuff, so a few music files, a few videos and thats it. No benchmarking programs, no games, nothing to actully stress the system out.

I asked one of the guys in the section if they would let me log onto the net temporarily so I could download 3dmark06 and maybe Sandra (to get screen panel specs) so I could diagnose the computer. He gave me this long speech about how they never let customers use the internet on the machines and its blocked for a reason blah blah blah. Well thats not true because about a year ago they had a really cool Toshiba I think it was and they let me connect to the net to get 3dmark06 for it. Plus dont you think having something like that would help sell the unit? whats going to wow somebody more a plain jain desktop that you cant do anything with or watching this high end video card benchmark?

I had half my mind to lock them out of there own computer, or manually lower the Vista score to like .2 but all I did was turn off the lcd via the function key, I bet that was enough to blow there minds for a good hour or so.

Na, it was more habit than anything. When ever I leave my laptop on my desk at work I turn off the backlight.

The unit was not even turned on when I went into the store so not like it matters.

Just curious, why do you turn off the backlight? Is it to save the battery or save the display? Thanks!

It does both, but I usually am plugged in so battery is not an issue. Backlight have a estimated total life time. Much longer than I would probably ever own a laptop but I still turn it off to make it last longer when ever I am not using the laptop.

Also I work solo since I am the overnight guy but especially for that small amount of people that may be around in the morning before I leave, if they are around while I am not at the desk nobody can see what I am doing.

The Dilemma I have is, im picking between two

    http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs...Id=8198552921644570896&parentCategoryId=16154

This runs cool and quiet annd very very beautiful but ATI 3470 not enough for game when COD world at war comes out...

but the Asus one can probably play at fairly high setting on the 1368 x 768 resolution and still portable and 0.2 pounds lighter than the Sony.

Sony has better CPU and more stylish, but Asus can play game whereas sony can not... the only deciding factor now is I wonder how hot and loud the asus runs cause I like to leave it on over night and my Gateway P6860FX just heat up the room and fan bugs me.....any suggestions?

Ran these before i upgraded the processor:

    SM2.0 Score=2844
    HDR/SM3.0 Score=2636
    CPU Score=1592
    Total Score=6182

It's quite as a mouse, doesn't get hot, even after playing many games over the course of the day. Battery life...seems to be non-existentent, I'll get some times when i get home today. It has a batter saving mode, i'll test that out and see how long it lasts just running, no games or whatsoever. Then i'll test how long it runs with active programs running.

So you got the X1 and your going to upgrade the cpu? Too what and how much did the cpu cost you?

Also the benchmark you didnt list what benchmark your using (I can guess 3dmark06) but you still need to post the resolution you used for the results to be comparable to anything.

My bad, I used 3dmark06, resolution was 1280x720.

3dmark06 scores for 1366x768 resolution were:

    SM2.0 Score-2601
    HDR/SM3.0 Score-2443
    CPU Score-1585
    3dMark06 Score-5742

I upgrade to a t9300 because i found someone selling one for really cheap around my area($180, killer deal for me, factory sealed).

Thats cool, I had debated grabbing the X1 and then upgrading to the 2.8ghz model that way it would be better than the A1 but thats before I got all the information on all the models and found that the cpu was far from the only difference between the two.

The point I wanted to make is that you paid probably $1300 for the X1 and now +$200 so your at $1500 for only $100 more you could have had the A1 with the better screen, better cpu still. Better ram, and I think the BB model has an older wireless card in it too.

Then toss in the fact that you only have a 1 year warrenty vs the 2 year warranty and the BB model did it come with the MX518 mouse and targus bag? All of that is so easily worth $100 and thats with you getting a deal on the cpu. Im trying my best to preach that the X1 is not as good a deal as the A1 and upgrading it to be better based on its price you wont be able to upgrade it as cheap as you could have just gotten the A1 for.

If i could have, i would have gotten the A1, without a doubt. But seeing as I didn't have enough money to buy it on my own, I had to resort to to the parentals for the rest of the cash. Only way they would have let me get a computer was if I found one at best buy, so, they could put it on their stupid card; this was my only choice. The A1 without a doubt is a much better deal, and very worth the extra 300 dollars .

Hey Purdy, so leaving your X1 flat on the desk and play game, doesnt get hot and in a quiet room, there is no or not much noise at all? my gateway FX is constantly pumping out hot air... its not really loud but the constant slight whine of the fan kinda ruin a quiet room at night

Outside of when it's idle whenever I game or have my brand new asus on for more than an hour I hear the fan whining.

The cores currently are at 77C and 79C respectively (I have a game minimized atm) and they idle at around 70C.

When I game/play DVDs the cores are at mid to high 70s - is that normal? Mine just hit 80... =s. I want to make sure that's normal.

I can't accurately answer the heat question anymore, seeing as I upgraded my cpu, and it runs much cooler than what Etopn says his runs at.

I live in Canada and I've been searching for a gaming laptop at around 1000$ for quite a while now and when I saw this deal on bestbuy united states I tought it couldn't get any better than this. But I'm not really sure if I should wait or go down to the US to get one soon. The nearest bestbuy that has an x1 is within a 2 hours drive from my house so it's not that bad. thanks :)

    hello,

I'm considering too buy this BB model, with that price its hard say no. I know that the another model is beyond better but for my purposes it's seems ok. I play a lot TF2 and BF2142, edit videos, surf web and burn some dvds. Probably if i buy this one i will buy crysis :D. My current pc has the Radeon X1300 video card (i know very poor card) but has worked fine those games.

Also i'm checking another models at BB from HP below 1099.99 price and found some one coolest with blue ray option, but less video card option. To be perfect i wish that has the blue-ray drive :(

But i didn't find anything about the battery life of this model BB Asus model, someone know this?

I need to know to make my final decision

    Thanks

Well it's seem a better processor up to 2.1 and 2.6 Ghz, 3MB cache, more space and fingerprint reader, bag and mouse.

But the graphic card doesn't good as the BB model. According with this page http://www.notebookcheck.net/Comparison-of-Graphic-Cards.130.0.html the BB model offer a class 1 of graphic card and the one's that are u telling are a class 2 graphic cards. (Both can be played well but class one is better :D )

Also the BB model has 7200rpm HD and the other have 5400rpm.

I don't know much of CPU's, probably with those CPU's it will make the games run faster and smoothly.

Also considering HP dv5-1017nr w/blue ray, 320GB, 4gb. But with Nvidia 9200M GS, a graphic card class 3 :(. But the blue ray seems good to me...

More  each day.... what should i do?

I just snagged the last one at my local BB. They had five of these, and sold out in one day.

Overall so far, I really like it. I know its not the great version from the resellers, but for 1099 its a steal.

I noticed when I took off the bottom case, the big ole vent on the bottom isnt "open". The inside has what looks like a large circular plastic sticker on it. I originally thought it was just a mesh screen for dust, but its not... so whats the point of making that big vent and mesh if it doesnt even allow air to come through it?

I mean, it would make sense that they want air to be pulled in at the other vents to force air across the other components... but why design it with flair, where its never seen?

Looks like on the battery saver setting default, I was able to get a solid 2 hours, usually more like 2:45 with mild surfing/****, emailing, etc.

Mileage will vary, but a solid 2 hours.

Might not be enough for people looking for a college book and gamer.

And what are the things that u like the most and the worst of this laptop?

I like almost everything about this laptop. I think a slightly larger HDD would be nice, and the screen res could at least be 1440x900... sometimes things feel a bit cramped on the screen, especially with MMOs.

It plays games like a champ so far. I have played COD4, AO, UT 3, and C&C3... all run flawlessly. Albeit I havent tried going nuts with the graphic settings, just putting everything on at least medium and tossing it in native res.

The laptop is peppy all around, the proc isnt that bad at all... I will probably upgrade it later on. They got smart, my laptop has a warranty seal right over the screws that secure the heatsink/heatpipe assembly to the processor. So no sneaking by on the warranty like you can on Gateway's FX.

The heat that comes out of the vent on the left side gets very hot... I know that its a combined with both the GPU and CPU, so its expected.. but it gets pretty **** hot. The laptop stays cool though... palm rests dont get all hot nor does the keyboard.

Overall I think they did good on this laptop.

PS - I have gotten more than two hours of battery time easy... I was watching lots of iTunes shows on my previous test.

PPS - The Direct Console OLED display; I cant get it to tell me when I get a messenger message or an email message. Tried it all, even broke out the "struckshuns".

Um im going to buy the warranty when i go back to best buy they have other warranty's but since i had to order online the only warranty they offer on the spot online is for 3 years and costs like 350 or something like that

and i put in my X1's serial number on the Asus accidental warranty thing and it says that my laptop qualifies, even tho i put that i got it from best buy and i typed the exact model name, ill find out more info as soon as i mail them a copy of a proof of purchase, as they instructed me to do so.
wish i could just email or fax it would be so much easier

the express gate works perfectly on mine, and im pretty sure it comes with the face recognition, is that the smart login thing? i havent bother trying it since i dont seem to find a need for it myself.

also i dont what people are complainig about wireless for, my router is on th eother side of the house and i get a perfect signal, I have a WRT54G Linksys i also use it for my PS3 no problems.

and to add i connected it to those litle speakers that usually come with eMachine Desktops and i dont know what people are talking about a humming noise these things work perfectly.
The laptop may not have a good set of speakers, but the second you plud something else into it sounds like u pretty much have ur own sound system or one nice *** stereo lol

Yeah that's one. Just it's a cool idea to log on fast only. I heard that u may be careful with the Best Buy warrany. I checked some reviews at goggle and a lot of people complaining that they didn't accept the complains failures.

It will be better follow the Asus accidental warranty indeed. It doesn't cost u anything right?

But they mention that Best Buy isn't covered :( (scroll down at that link at Questions and Answers)

What retailers don’t participate in the program?
Currently Best Buy, Best Buy Canada, Micro Center, and The Source by Circuit City in Canada do not participate. Notebooks bought from these retailers are not covered by the ADW or ASUS 360.
