Just bought this laptop on ebay (p8400 cpu, 9800m gs, no overclocking) and I find that within 5 minutes of gaming my temps hit 95c, and idle around 64c with nothing going on. I'm pretty sure this isn't right, I checked the fans and they seem pretty clean, could it be the thermal compound? HWinfo shows CPU temps as normal and only GPU seems to be high. any tips on how to sort this out will be greatly appreciated.

I noticed similar problem on mine after i installed window 7, do you have Window 7 and also i heard the G50Vt only has one fan on the CPU but the flow is connected with a copper tube from the CPU to the GPU have u ever opened ur case to confirm that?

yes, I have Windows 7, but i seriously doubt software can be responsible for these ridiculous temps. My other machine's all have 7 and barely ever touch 80c.

Yep, there is only one fan, with one copper tube connecting CPU and GPU, but cpu temps are fine. I've just ordered some Arctic Silver Ceramique, will try applying it and see if it makes a difference.
Anyone have any tips for applying thermal paste as its my first time doing it, wouldnt like to screw it up.

Asus G5X latops run hot, but the G50 from what i remember didnt go as high as G51, but i could be wrong. Since you bought it on ebay, the user could flashed it to GTS, this might be another reason that it run hotter, check the following thread to see and compare temps maybe its your case. Exostenza's guide to Flashing the 9800m GS to GTS, aslo check G50 owners lounge to see if you temps are normal compare to other uses.

G60 users are having trouble with drivers for idle temps under win7, so yea idle could be easily explained by drivers, since it doesnt automatic downclock in 2d. But for loads check the other threads.

I've checked the frequencies and it downclocks without any issues, bios is not overclocked either. Just going by how quickly it heats up, and how much slower these temps drop compared to my other laptops I'm guessing it has to be the thermal compound.

right, I'm at a loss. I've applied new thermal compound (not arctic silver, but it shouldnt matter that much, right?), undervolted to 0.9v from 1.05v, and downclocked it a little bit as well. Same result, 96c before it even finishes 3dmark06 run. Any ideas?

Differences between one TIM and another are within a couple of degrees if applied correctly.

As for your temperatures, run Furmark and see if your fan starts to ramp up. An undervolt and something-better-than-stock-paste shouldn't be hitting that temperature.

I'm starting to suspect i may have a faulty temp sensor as within 10mins of gaming its running at 105c, but it does not downclock or crash, or show any other signs of overheating.
Could anyone check what their GPU temp is when your laptop is just turned on for the first time? Mine is 42c, whilst all other temps (cpu, mobo, etc) are in their 20s.

At start up, my GPU is usually 38-40C and my core temps are 38-44C.
