I am interested in doing a clean install of my Asus G51J.

I understand that if i use the recovery partition on the harddisk, all the bloatware and unnecessary programs will be installed as well. Is this correct?

The only way is to use the recovery disk (1 DVD only, right?) that comes with the laptop. This recovery disk actually contain the original Window CD. The recovery disk will prompt me to enter the Driver CD. if i did not put the Driver CD in or if i choose not to install any application from this Driver CD when prompt, the installation will be considered a CLEAN INSTALL. Am i right?

Also, what is the serial number that i should use for this clean installation? Is it the number shown on the sticker on the base of my laptop? I understand for HP laptop, this serial number is useless as the window software they installed is called a OEM software. My question is if i can use the serial number on the base of my laptop for the serial number to be used in the installation.

Also, i am thinking of upgrading to Window 7 Professional. Will i get a new serial number or do i use the old serial number? Will it mess up my upgrade if i use the new serial number instead of the old serial number for Window 7?

    Please advise.

Use the recovery disc and choose the install option to do onto one hardrive. After everything finishes you will get to a point that it is asking you to put in the drivers disc. Even if you put in the driver disc it won't work and is looking for some kind of recovery file. It is at this point that Asus told me it is safe to reboot. I did this and the windows 7 clean install continued. I at no point was asked for any windows key. I then followed one of the guides to install only the necessary asus drivers and such.

I am not sure about how the professional upgrade would go but does not seem that it would be an issue ...

Yes, recovery partition installs "as delivered" from factory,

Yes, continue without driver disk to avoid ASUS-ware.

Yes, the number on the bottom will work for the original installation (Win7 Home).

If you install Professional use that number. Should be no problem but if there is a quick call to Microsoft will get you a new code, assuming your copy of Pro is genuine and has not been used before. If you are transferring from another machine you'll need to explain that to MS; last time I did that it was no hassle.

Just call MS. A few years ago I had an OEM copy of XP and had done too many reinstalls over the course of a couple of years, and my license came up invalid. Called MS and explained that all I was doing was a format and reinstalled and gave them the product key, and they reactivated it. Took all of ten minutes to do.

I was told that HP clean install is very complicated as they have a OEM license for windows and a real but hidden license for windows.

so for Asus, i just use its license straight from the notebook.

Any fresh install guide for Asus G51J or for Asus in general? there seems to be none unlike for HP notebook cos hp so much more complicated.
