Hey, I am debating between the MSI GX640 and the Asus G51JX-X3 from Amazon (haven't found this specific model anywhere else yet).

    Asus G51JX-X3
Intel Core i5-430M Processor 2.26 GHz with Turbo Boost Technology up to 2.53 GHz
    4GB DDR3 1066MHz RAM, 2 SODIMM Slots; 8GB Max
500GB Hard Drive (7200 RPM); Super Multi Optical Disk Drive; Wi-Fi 802.11 bgn
15.6" Full HD 1920x1080 LED LCD Display; NVidia GTS 360M Graphics Engine with 1GB DDR5 dedicated VRAM
Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) Operating System; Bluetooth; 2.0MP Webcam; Backlit Chiclet Keyboard

So I basically the Asus has a worse graphics card, (it will be fine for my purposes) but it has a better resolution and a backlit chiclet keyboard (which I prefer).

I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this or similar models and how hot they run during both basic use and gaming and how loud it is during basic use (doesn't really matter when gaming). I have read through some of the reviews on this and similar laptops and there are very mixed reviews about the heat. Also, seems to be quite a few BSoD accounts. So I am just wondering what everyone's opinions on it here.

Thanks in advance for all help.

It's kind of funny.. I have been looking at laptops for the past month and I came down to the same conclusion. From what I've seen, the major differences are that the MSI GX640 has lower resolution, no backlit keyboard, and it doesn't have the same reputation as Asus, but it has a 9 cell battery, doesn't get as hot, and it has better graphics card. (And personally, the Asus looked a little ridiculous, but that's all personal opinion) Also the Asus has gone up in price on Amazon, so hopefully it'll be back down when you finally decide to buy one. I think I'm going to buy the MSI though.

are you sure about that? i saw a lot of post going easy over 90s, and some to 100s, not sure if it was core temp, as the new ati have lots of temp sensors, but regardless its not a cool running laptop as you might think, not saying its bad choice, just it does get hot, maybe even hotter than G51, but no doubt better performer, and i would still get it over the G51 out of better gpu.
