I just recently bought an Asus G51VX-RX05 from Best Buy. When I got it home and turned it on, I noticed there was quite a bit of bloatware on it, and also noticed that there was no Windows Vista disk on the box. How could I go about reformatting it? My main purpose for the reformat would to start this laptop on a clean slate.

Go back to Best Buy and tell them you're missing a component--which is Vista disc is.

If they refuse, you can ask to return it and buy a new one that would have the CD still inside.

Well, I have the same, and it has two ways to reformat.

A: Mine Did come with recovery discs, And every one I've opened (work at BBY) has them too.

B: System does have a recovery partition as well... F9 on boot at the Asus logo screen.

I say take it back and exchange it, And if others are missing their discs there could be a bad batch at your local BBY. OR, The store is tampering with the boxes (highly unlikely)

From what I read around here you need the retail disc.

The bloatware is really not bad and didn't take me long to delete all of the stuff I didn't need. Just use this guide as a reference: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=380681

If you go this route let me know if there is anything on there that you are not sure about or is missing. Check out the Vista Tweak Guide on here too and blackviper.com for more optimization.

Yeah like people have said before, there is basically no bloatware compared with all the stuff Dell and HP computer come with. You can reformat if you wish but there is really no need.

Or you can start recovery with the first DVD, when it asks for the second... Remove the CD from the drive... Press and hold the Power Button for 3 seconds... Turn o your machine again.. and there you are... A real clean Vista install..

Then you can use the G60 Drivers CD ( The blue one ) to install only what you wanna...

I do have the recovery disks, I just figured they'd install all the bloatware too. Are you sure interrupting the recovery half way would work? Could I get some confirmation on this? I know the bloatware isn't that bad at all, and that it's possible to get rid of most of it manually... But I have a bit of OCD, which gives me a strong desire to have a 100% fresh, clean slate. :p

Im pretty sure I have a separate disk for the software and drivers than the "recovery" disk in the g71...

When you are in the process of re-installing Vista with your recovery disk, you will encounter a pop-up message asking you to insert the drivers disk. At this point, press and hold your power button to shut down your system. Press the power button again to start, and your notebook will boot into Vista without any issues and without any drivers or bloatware. Now, you can install all your necessary drivers and leave out any bloatware you desire.

This is highly not recommended due to many incompatible drivers/poor driver support.

David explained better than me =)

Yes.. im 100% sure you can interrupt your "Recovery Process" half-way... I got about 200 points increase in 3DMark 2006 with a fresh real clean Windows Vista install without bloatwares...

Just remember one thing... Doing that, you will first boot Vista without any Graphic Driver... and LAN, and lots of stuffs, so the computer will be useless until you install all that stuff with your G60 Driver DVD ( The blue one ) ...

Ok well i just purchased this comp and right now it is being updated with the latest spysweeper anti-virus software so i wont get it until tomorrow but i was wondering if the recovery discs will actually come with it. I get the feeling that they are going to rip me off. Anyone that purchased it from best buy and knows what im talking about please help.

Haha, did they try and offer you the "Optimization and/or Restore Disc" service?

I work at Best Buy, so I sell quite a few a day. If they were offering you restore discs, chances are the employee just didn't realize that the G51 comes with restore discs. Most computers minus a few of the Asus's, the Dell's, and a couple of the Toshiba's don't come with restore discs, so we usually offer it to people who just want to save some time and hassle. An optimization I'd say is pretty useful, some of the registry tweaks Geek Squad does are pretty effective, but you definitely won't need any restore discs because they most definitely come with them...

Which also means that if you get it back and you can't find the recovery disc, they probably forgot to pack it back in so make sure you go back and get it.

    There is some bloatware.

Some of the Asus programs provided are unnecessary and there are some other 3rd party stuff but I would say it doesn't have as much bloat as other vendors like Dell and such
