I checked to see if they were in stock just now and Newegg has them listed as deactivated. Here's their explanation on what that means:
So does this mean that it could soon be replaced with an i7 mobile variant? I hope so!
-
Same with the A1. only the X2A is active. I would think it is more likely that it's a supply problem, and they will get more notebooks with slightly different specs and a new model designation. I can't see Asus putting this into production and then pulling it so soon...if they wanted to, they would have simply skipped to the next generation. Asus will certainly have an i7 mobile out, but I would expect to see it introduced alongside the G51.
-
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Asus should be done with all of their model updates for the 3rd qtr now.
Next updates (historically) don't happen until mid-4th qtr and toward the holidays.
Core upgrades are going to probably require some new motherboard builds, so that's a major update - these occur usually during two parts of the year (late Fall & late Spring) and in conjunction with whatever Intel roadmap cpu/platform release occurs. -
-
I'm hoping that Asus releases an updated G51 in time for the Windows 7 release in late October. MSI already announced that they will be releasing a mobile core i7 around then so Asus can't be far behind. -
B) Have you checked the price of i7-m? Theyre expensive, and there will of course be an early adopters fee as well, so it will likely push $2000+ with a configuration similar to yours.
C) They wont be obsolete just because a new product is out. The biggest difference will be the CPUs, which as I said, would have a smaller difference if you had gotten a Q9000 over a T9600. Everything else will likely be similar or the same, as I dont see Asus using a GPU more powerful than the GTX 260m in these machines.
D) Its just business. Competition = Need for Innovation. Asus will not be the only company to put i7-m in their laptops, and as such, I see no reason for them to stop their production and innovation. Like I said. Its just business. -
I'm saying they will not knock off the G51 so soon. I would expect to seem something like a G51VX-X3A with bluray, or other tweaks to the specs like that. Asus seems to like having an infinite number of sub-model designations for different hardware on the same model. I would expect the G51 to stay on the current Asus timeline, with about a year of sales before the G52 is released.
-
I don't think Asus will miss the boat on the W7 release by not putting out an i7 mobile to compete with MSI and the other OEMs. Whether or not they update the G51 remains to be seen but I personally think they will introduce a new i7 model with a GTX 260m and a 1080p screen. The G51 may still exist in one form or another until it's phased out. This works out perfect for me, I just sold my Studio XPS 16 and have a month and a half worth of intense studying coming up so once that's over, I'll grab the Asus mobile i7

I would guess the I7 chipsets will be matched with the lower series 100M Nvidia cards or ATI equal, thus offering a balance of great computing with decent gaming.
I would not expect to see a high performance CPU and GPU anywhere near that price range. -
In response to the G51's abrubt disappearance from the Egg, who only knows what goes on at the Egg really.
We can make lots of guesses, mine would be....
Asus intended the next gen to be the G60 16" however for whatever reason they were not ready (screen probably) and they didn't want to wait and lose out on the release of the new 200M series Nvidia cards, so as a stop gap measure they put out the G51 models. Why else would all the software, naming etc reflect the G51 models as G60s.
Now the G60 is ready so they no longer need or want to support both a 15.4 and 16" laptop that share basically the same physical size and components.
Don't expect i7s to show up next, expect to see G60 16" to appear. I bet a single call to ASUS pre-sales could confirm this im just to tired to do it this time around (i.e. W90). Not to mention im a happy G15-X1A owner and couldn't be happier without buyers remorse (esp. at that price). -
I was looking forward to picking up this laptop when Newegg brought it off their "Out of Stock" status, but seeing it deactivated makes my heart sink a little. Such an awesome laptop at a great price. I have the G51VX-RX05 from a local electronics outlet right now, and since I don't quite feel like dropping $1600 on a laptop, I may end up keeping it for a while.
-
It doesnt make much sense that the G60 be a replacement for the G51 because its reportedly MUCH more more expensive then the G51 was. Unless Asus makes a stripper version which reports say will come with a 1366 x 768 screen. Either way, neither G60 version sound as appealing as the G51 was. I can only hope the G60 will come with a 1080p screen, 2.53 cpu, 260M and 1399-$MIR like the G51 was.

Looking at specs, the only difference between a G60vx and a G51vx is the screen size. Not even the resolution.
(Comparing, of course, the same models. I.e. A1 to A1) -
Agreed, G60vx doesn't seem a likely successor. They may eventually add the model but I think the next step coming up soon are the i7 based systems.
-
maybe they are going to redo the cooling system lol
-
Why don't they just put "out of stock" like every other site?
-
-
If I had to make a guess, I would say that Newegg found that they made better money on the X2A than the X1A, which are both exclusive to them, so they reordered just the X2A from Asus. The A1 is widely available, so it is a pain for Newegg to keep up with the prices on them, especially since they can be customized by resellers. It makes sense for them to just stock the X2A and drop the others.
-
-
I just checked to verify, and the X2a is out of stock. The others just reappeared. Prices went up on the A1 and the X2a.
-
Well crap...too bad they had to go and make it look like they weren't going to have anymore of the X1A's in stock anymore. Ordered a Dell Studio XPS 16 over the weekend since I got such a good deal on it.
-
Did they even have the X1A back in stock? It's still listed as auto notify. If they are getting them in, it must be a handful at a time. Bing no longer lists the X1A either which means no cash back. I really want the core i7 version (assuming there will be one) but then again I don't have a laptop right now..hmm.
-
SXPS 16 is a great laptop, you can't go wrong with it. It won't have the gaming performance of a gtx 260m but it should be still be pretty decent. -
The X1A is has "Add to Cart" button when you search the laptop (just search for GPU: GTX260M" but when you click on it it goes to "Auto-Notify." But it definitely isn't listed as "Deactivated" anymore.
I'm still seeing a 10% Bing cashback ad for the Egg when I go to bing.com, sign in, and search "newegg". It's in a little ad/banner either at the top or top-right - click that. -
-
Why aren't people getting the A1 instead? With the 10% bing + $100 MIR it only comes out to approximately $300 more than the X1A except you get a quad core, double the hard drive space and a better motherboard--the one on the X1A cannot take quad core from what I read. Damn this is a tough choice.
-
It has not been confirmed that the X1A cannot take quadcores, its up in the air right now.
-
Didn't forge test the BB one and confirm it didn't work? From the serial numbers that were posted, the motherboards seem like the same ones except a slight difference in revision (I'm recalling from memory so I could be wrong). It might not be directly confirmed yet but it does point in that direction. Since you own the X1A, how do you think your OC at 3.1 GHz compares to a Q9000 at a 2.3 GHz OC in terms of gaming performance? I'd also think the heat output from the quad probably puts even more pressure on an already heat stressed system. To me heat is a very important issue so if the X1A can be OC'd on avg to about 2.8 GHz and still run cooler than a Q9000, I'm sold. -
the A1 also has a "slight difference in revision" iirc, and it supports quads. I haven't done any testing in CPU intensive games, but I'm getting playable framerates in every game I've played so far: mass effect, crysis, prototype, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, Bioshock and more. my CPU even when OC'd to 3.1GHz, (it could go further with more voltage) never breaks 63C, even after an hour or Orthos testing. When OC'd to 3.1GHz I idle at 35-38C, when not OC'd I idle at 32-36C.

Emailed yesterday a local store which had the A1 version listed for 1719 CAD. It was out of stock and no delivery was pending. Seller told me he would check with his supplier. His answer today was "G51vx-A1 is no longer available from ASUS".
Just can't understand why a company would invest so much money in design just to make 500 laptops and withdraw from market. Unless something was really wrong with the first batch... Most of the canadian online retailers are out of stock and with no due arrivals... weird
Newegg canada still shows all g51 trims as deactivated.
Anybody thinks a Core i7 is due in next g51vx as early as this fall? Or should I jump on one of the scarce notebooks still out there? Worse case scenario being a NP8662 but I really like the backlit keyboard and num pad of the G51...
Thanks for your opinions -
You and I are in the same boat. I sold my SXPS 16 so I could buy the X1A and when the time came, the damn thing was out of stock. I then started reading up on the fall refresh of notebooks and mention of the i7 popped up. So it's very possible the i7 will be replacing the current G51v and that's why Asus is phasing it out so quickly. The only other reason I can think of is that they are retooling the cooling but that would be wishful thinking. I really do need a laptop right now so I hope either the X1A's come back in stock or Asus makes an announcement on the i7 mobiles. -

i7 is same or actually worse for gaming??? Why wait? -
I'm glad you posted that since it confirmed what I was suspecting: That the GTX 260m is the bottleneck with an oc'd C2D, especially near native resolution. Although I was impressed with the massive overclock the i7 was able to achieve despite the negligible gaming results. Now if the X1A would come back in stock, I'd buy it. -
i always thought that it would be a while since games actually benefit from the quad-core processors. That's why i dont care too much, core 2 duos are probably better for gaming but quad cores benefit for video rendering and such.
Not sure though...I'm just waiting until windows 7 hits laptops, then I'll buy one. Just dont want to go through the hassle of upgrading from vista. Surviving on my toshiba for now. -
I grabbed the X2A that came in stock this morning! Rush order processed, can't wait until it arrives!

What is the release date of the G60vx anyway?
-
Maybe Asus is just focusing on Quad cores. What is happening to the G51/71 (non Best Buy models) is very reminisant of the W90. The W90 was originally released as an X1 model with a Duo Core which had a short shelf life and was replaced by the X2 & A1 (2.0 Quad).
I just received an email from ASUS yesterday highlighting the G51.....

How much does the quad version overclock with the asus software?

SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
It depends on the quality of the processor.
You might struggle to get past 2.2 GHz, or you can breeze past 2.5. You have to test it to be sure.
