I have an Asus G51vx-rx05 - How can I tell if its the BestBuy version? (I got mine refurbished); Is it possible to upgrade the cpu to a quad? If so, which one?

    Thanks!

all of the Rx-05 suffiixes that are affixed to the g series of late have meant that theyre the best buy version i think, if it is, there has been extensive testing by some of our forums most outstanding members on quad core compatibility with the g51 from best buy, and the verdict was that its just not possible, at least as of now, and not to hold your breath for a fix ever either.

You mean the G in front of the 51 or something else? Sorry, I'm confused. :(

It seems like the Q9100 would work, if mine is not the BestBuy version.

Any other compatible CPUs that would improve performance?

Also, would anyone mind explaining/linking to why/how the BestBuy version is different?

Your machines sku number ends with "Rx-05" meaning that it is in fact probably a best buy model, which can not run quad cores.

apparently its not something that could be changed by modding the bios either, there were talks of different motherboard revisions between the bb models (rx-05) and the online resellers' (A1, X1, etc). If you dont have the bb version you're as good as gold, i think a qx9300 will work as well. for more info, you can read this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=403860 or just search the forum

Trust me, a quad won't work. Lots of work went into finding that out.

I did end up making money off it though, for my pains.
