Hey guys,
i got a Asus G60jx from best buy last sunday, and havn't really gotten around to messing with this until last night. When I play WoW on ultra settings, I am only getting 30FPS (not in a content heavy zone). Also when i am playing games and i want to adjust the volume up or down via the function key (FN), the screen will flicker in the middle where it normal icon would show up.
I tried to update the bios (206) and updated to the lastest graphic drivers from Nvidia via their website, but neither of these fixed the problem. Can somone guide in the right direction?
I called Asus and told them my problem, they cant help me because their warranty cant service any of best buy's products. So now i'm kinda SOL, i called best buy and said i want a return, they said 15% restocking fee.

That flicker is the ATK On Screen Display (ATKOSD.exe) showing up in your game as you use the Fn + F keys. I don't think its any kind of driver problem. I had this problem as well on my G51. What you can do is stop that process in Task Manager or using a very helpful program called Process Explorer. When you stop the process, instead of getting the main graphic animation in the middle of your screen it will revert to a very simplified display in the top left of your screen. It will still show up in some games but is very light and is not in the middle of your screen at least.
In this post (point 6.3) one person mentions changing the name so it won't load at startup. I haven't tried this but may be helpful to you.
Another thing you can do is set up Tap Zones on your touchpad to adjust the volume up or down. This won't have any graphic display when you change the volume and won't interfere with your game at all.
Just go to Start>Control Panel>Mouse>Device Settings Tab>Settings>Tapping>Tap Zones
I've set the top left corner to increase volume and bottom left corner to decrease. Works great -
thanks alot dune10191 i will try that when i get home, do have any explanation for the low FPS during game play?

I think these laptops are powerful but they are still laptops. I don't play Wow but in the games I play I still don't run full out for the FPS I like. Don't expect power desktop performance out of the g5x-g6x's yet. Just my opinion. Maybe it should be faster but Ultra settings in full resolution on that CPU/GPU will give it quite a challenge. Maybe other G60 WoW players will chime in and give good advice.
Try playing with the settings and resolution or find some guides on how to improve your G60's performance too.

Wait, are you serious when you say Asus won't warranty the laptop because Best Buy sold it? What kind of bull is that. I would talk to a manager because on their website it says:
Warranty Terms - Parts
1 year
#
Warranty Terms - Labor
1 year limited.
Someone has to warranty your laptop. Try calling Asus again and I am sure they will want to help. This makes no sense! -
The reason that Best Buy Asus laptops are so cheap is because there were alot of compromises. Part of it is that Asus no longer covers the warranty and the responsibility falls to Best Buy, allowing for a lower price.
Thus, all Best Buy Asus laptops must go through Best Buy for any warranty related issues. -

lol bestbuy will be willing to sell you a 1 year performance replacement plan for $99 dollars when Asus gives it to you for free. I ended up returning my laptop.

After hearing about the good reviews on this laptop, I picked one up and have had no problems as of yet.
I did load it up with WOW and am getting a solid 60 fps with Fraps.
As recommended above, I did totally uninstall ATKOSD2 and all the other bloatware as per this link
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/380681-asus-utility-bloatware-guide.html.
WOW runs and looks great!
Love it!
