    Hi guys!

I am really really interested in an Asus G71 and am planning to buy one in the UK.

I was wondering if you would be kind enough to post in this thread, all the problems faced by the model and whether it would be a good idea to purchase one.

Your input would of great help to me, as well as any potential G71 owner. They could refer to this thread to help decide whether the G71 is worth it.

I thank you all in advance for your help and cooperation!

I don't know if this is a problem or not but the audio and mic on it sucks(then again I was using a MBP before this so I guess I might have unfair expectations). Also battery life is sub-par.

When buying a performance laptop like this you wouldnt expect a lot of battery life but I will agree that the speakers on g71g wont be anywhere near as good as that on the Toshiba X300/305 series...

Yea the speakers are mediocre but thats what my Grado Rs-1s are for. It's just a bit of a dissapointment. I also noticed that it's somewhat hard to click with the mousepad, the click buttons aren't very easy to push which I feel might make gaming harder than it should.

Well just more of a general comment. Also am I the only one having a nightmare of a time with the mic. I've experimented with it and everyone says they can barely hear me. Any tips, I've already experimented with the volume.

    Me: G71G-A2

Battery - I agree the life is crap. However, as mentioned this is expected from this kind of machine and it doesn't bother me since I'll have it plugged in most of the time. Was more looking for a relocatable machine that I can use anywhere in my house than a true notebook.

Touchpad Buttons - Agreed on the design is hard to click but for general use I am used to them now. I use a mouse most of the time however.

Speakers - No subwoofer so a bit tinny but not bad otherwise. Periodic click comes from them though it doesn't really bother me - others have reported this as well and it will probably be solved by a BIOS update or something.

Camera - Mine came from factory with the lens mis-seated in the bezel and they are replacing it for me. There is a noticable lag in the capture but I am unsure if this is a factor of the misalignment or not.

I haven't had a chance to play further though I did find that UT3 runs great even at 1900x1200; Battlefield Vietnam however will not run on Vista 64 Bit for me (though I've seen reports from others that it does?) and I have not found a solution yet. I can't even get to the initial movie screen when running it.

I also noticed the lag too, but is your mic not picking up the sound range it should be, because if it's just mine I might have to send mine in.

I've had similar problems with the Mic but haven't had time to experiment with fixing it yet. The realtek audio manager has a "microphone boost" that boosts the gain on it but I haven't had a chance to see if that helps (without introducing too much noise).

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the "cloudy spot" on the screen in dark scenes when viewed off-center. Not sure if it is worse on some than others or if some people just don't care as much (I don't watch movies on mine, particularly with multiple people viewing so it is fine for me).

    A few other nits:

    - The high-gloss black lid shows finger prints REALLY well.
    - No RAID :( (granted, not advertised, but dual drives without RAID - ?)
    - The utilities for the OLED display and mail light prevent Outlook from exiting completely
    - RAM is clocked at 667 instead of 800 if you enable the ability to overclock
    - I also find the mouse buttons really annoying. Takes a lot more pressure than I'm used to using to click
    - All of the USB ports are behind flaps. Would have been nice to have at least one exposed regularly for a mouse

No keyboard lag that I have seen. Can't speak to the other issue (haven't tried headphones and have no idea what s+d+space is).

the s+D+space is a combo for first person shooters. you know, like in CS when you move (strafe) and jump (space)

in the G50, this combo doesnt work or something...

Yea it looks like the mic on the laptop is an absolute piece of crap. I tried messing with the settings to no avail. Tried updating the drivers as well as use the mic boost but changes are minimal(mic boost adds a crapload of static btw).

The whitish cloud doesn't affect my screen as significantly as others and it's really barely noticeable with mine unless you're viewing a pitch black background. As for the USB ports,

I remember having the same issue on my Asus U6V, but I fixed it at the end (don't quite remember how though). I'll look into this a little more.

Unfortunately, S+D+space combo doesn't work either unless you're plugged into an external keyboard.

    Hi guys.
    I have a G71V and I have RAID0...
Can´t seem to understand why you don´t.

I also have that clicking sound issue.
Tried to update with the latest drivers from Realtek (wich shoud be realSH**) and it got worse

SO I unnistalled them and have the ones that come with vista. No more clicks.

I have no lag on the keyboard and everything works fine.

Anyone notice a grinding noise at bootup once in a while - almost like the fan blades hitting something? I've heard it twice on mine so far (once yesterday and once today) but it only lasts about 15 seconds, is only at bootup, and then goes away.

I've also noticed that the webcam doesn't seem to be mounted in the bezel with much quality control since I returned my first due to a mismount (lens was shifted up and to the left with a gap at the bottom right) and the one I received in replacement is also mismounted (though slightly better placement than the first). Support was exellent and painless for this and it is really a minor issue but for such a nice machine to have something laxed on like this is a mystery.

I notice hiss on my wireless headphones but am not sure if that is due to the USB or the RF signal to the headphones. During a game I don't notice it at all. I'll try on my wired headset and update soon.

I too have experienced this grinding sound on boot up. The problem seems to stem from the fan hitting on something but will gradually go away after 30 seconds or so.

Furthermore, has anyone noticed the really loud HDD clicking sounds? I am beginning to really doubt this purchase.

OK someone did mention the cloudy screen issue... I'll post a picture later tonight but basically, if you look at my screen from an angle left from center, about 1/4 into the screen on the right side there is a cloud that is noticable when dark colors are on the screen.

I' not sure how to do this but maybe someone can post a sticky at the beginning of this thead with bullet points of issues?

1 - Fan hitting something typically on bootup and lasting a varying amount of time (going away or staying sometimes?)

2 - Popping from speakers periodically

3 - Webcam lens not being centered in bezel properly

4 - Cloud(s) in sections of the LCD screen more prominent with dark scenes (try BLANK screensaver and look from all angles)

Might be best to ask who doesn't have the cloudy section on the screen (to some extent). I haven't heard anyone say that they don't have it at all yet.

I also have the intermittent speaker popping but no problems with the webcam or fan.

Just got my 71V today and have a problem that is bugging the crap outta me. Paid $1100 off ebay with it being advertised as NIB, but it came without a seal so idk if the dude before me busted it or what. Anyway, my left speakers will NOT work. both issue a hissing sound, and the same thing occurs when I plug in headphones. THe left headphone will hiss. Guessing this is a driver issue, but I dont see an updated sound driver on ASUS's website. ANyone have any ideas?
    Many Thanks

I have a new development on this... the cloud seems to have moved to the opposite side of my screen now! What gives here? I am in a different place (work) with it doing some updates and I'll have to check it from home again tonight but this is just plain WEIRD.

SOLVED! A buddy said it looked like a pressure discoloration and suggested I press on the screenn slightly in that area - and it moved and some of it disappeared! I am cleaning the fingerprints from the scren now and it went away completely.

I'm wondering if the pressure is caused by me putting it in the backpack - this would explain how it moved from one side to the other on me...

That's great news! I guess the reason why I didn't notice it much was because I applied pressure all over the back of the screen to test for flex and screen ripples for my review :p

that happened to me yesterday, I took my laptop to work and when I turned it on I noticed a bigger cloud on the screen  , I just tried what you said and It kinda dissapeared, but if you see the screen from another angle you can still see a little bit, but still its a good thing, thanks for the tip

It didn't fully go away until I cleaned the whole screen thereby (assuming) applying the same pressure to the entire screen area - kinda like pushing a bubble out of tape. I say "pressure" but in reality it is a light touch that should not damge the screen in any way. I expect the cloud to return again if my idea about applying pressure from the back of the lid when putting it into the bag is correct.

To get rid of it, I started on the left side working across to the right and applied more pressure in the area where the cloud was. I still have light leakage at the top and bottom but that is to be expected with any laptop I suppose.

Now to fix that fan clatter...

I've only had one problem. This is with the Ram. It is underclocked to 667 and there is an Option in the bios called "Underclock Ram" or something that pretty much says that and if you disable this windows will not boot. It loads bios and then black screen.

Only other problems are vista specific and also the 9800GS drives cause windows to crash ocasionally when it switches between all those different power settings...just give me one it runs at smoothly. I will call asus about this. Most of this should be simple driver fixes, so they have no excuse but to fix this. Faster ram would help unload the CPU if im not mistaken

Ken from gentechpc mentioned that it's the TurboGear in the BIOS that is causing the downclocking of the ram. If you disable TurboGear the memory speed will run at 800 Mhz but you won't be able to overclock CPU in Windows. Asus said 667mhz is better for overclocking mode.

Tried but windows did not boot went to loading screen for a second and blue screened, restarted automaticly, blue screeened. rinse and repeat...re-enabled turbo gear and it works now. Apparantly this laptop needs 667 mhz to run, should I contact ASUS to begin an RMA?

You should try to uninstall turbo gear from windows first. This is what Ken from gentechpc told me to try, but i didnt try it yet.

FWIW I just installed BIOS 410 and now I can be heard so long as mic boost is set at 30%, noise suppression is on and acoustic echo cancellation is off.

Not saying it will fix the problem or that it's ideal, but it worked for me.

Any kind of update on the fan making the grinding noise when you first turn the notebook on? I just recently started getting this. When I first hit the power putton, it will do a quick like 3 second grind sound (kind of like a baseball card in the spokes of a bike), then go away, and then again when windows wants me to log in I get around 10-20 seconds of the grinding sound, and the it goes away for good. I only ever get it at start up, and my temps all seem fine. Is this something I need to be worried about? I really dont want to have to send it in for repairs.

I would strongly advise replacing the fan. You do not want to have a faulty fan in your notebook, it can lead to overheating and more severe problems.

If you really don't want to send it in service and the fan is not difficult to get to in your model (e.g., it may be directly accessible after popping up the bottom panels) you could call ASUS, explain the situation, and ask them to send you a replacement fan. You can then replace it yourself.

What games do you play this with? Do you sound like you are talking in water?

What I noticed is that if you do the boost and increase the recording quality, the sound gets better but at the 3rd and 4th quality settings, noice supression is not available and even though the sound wuality of the voice rocks, the whitenoise of the background does not.

Just a heads up - I just had an instance where the clicking would not go away, even after a reboot. It would go away if I turned the laptop on its side or upside down, so it sounded like something loose.

I shut off the laptop, opened up the bottom (the big panel), took out the big screws on the fan so I could pull it out a bit, then removed the silver top (two tiny screws), and looked around. Didn't see anything special, but I did notice a nearby piece of yellow tape holding down some wires, so I removed the piece of tape carefully, then reassembled the fan into the laptop and turned it back on - clicking was gone. Took about 15 minutes. now to see if it comes back...

-My G50VT-X6 doesn't have any keyboard lag.
    -Weak speaker
-The mouse buttons are hard to click but I like it that way cause it feels very durable.
-Came with a bright pixel, buzzing speakers, scratched on the screen brand new, the line in and mic jacks are really hard to plug in and unplugged. I probably had to put like 2-3 pounds of pressure to push it in. So I am sending it back to ASUS for a replacement today.
-Other than those defects, the laptop is very powerful and I love it very much. The front looks so sexy along with the LED and OLED screen. I don't get why people by this laptop and then complain about the LEDs.

I am having issues with my fan as well and have been for a while. It makes a very loud grinding noise. Once the computer starts heating up and the fan runs at full speed it will eventually balance out. I believe its a bearing issue and I really don't want to deal with the RMA process. I did submitt it for an RMA but I have never recieved the email with the FedEx label.

(to Volume) Did you try asking if they would send you a fan to replace yourself, I have been trying to contact asus today, but their Live Service is down and they have a huge queue, they were supposed to call me back 2hrs ago.

::Update:: They are shipping me the fan so I can replace it myself.

That's what they did with my fan. They just sent me a new fan and I didn't have to return the old. ;) The waiting time was a bit long since they had to order new fans from Taiwan, but it all worked out fine.
