    Hi people,

I just received my laptop that I ordered from GentechPC and everything looks good outside of couple issues that I'm sure other folks here have experienced. For one, I have a dead pixel that I've had no luck in repairing right in the middle of the screen. It's not a big deal but it's bothering the crap out off me since this is a new laptop. For two, it produces a popping noise out of the speakers which is really annoying. I called GentechPC but they said to contact Asus for possible exchange for a new system. Does anyone have any other suggestion for me? Thanks in advance.

You can also request that your speakers be examined during the repair process at Asus.

just note, call Asus, their customer service is usually pretty good, don't hesitate to call them. Their notebook RMA department is in California, bay area, if you are close by, you might even be able to bring it in.

Thanks for the replies, but my issues is that I just bought the laptop and would hate for it to be torn apart to change the LCD. That is just plain unacceptable to me, and I would return it before doing so. I'd much rather have it exchanged it for a new laptop with out the dead pixel. I don't want to be without a notebook for two weeks during the RMA process. Can I have the exchange process done through GentechPC? That sounds more practical. Please let me know. Thanks

The RMA process won't take 2 weeks. It should take 1 week at most. You may or may not get a brand new unit, but either way, that's a decision made by Asus, and not usually by resellers. Most reseller can provide technical help, but when it comes to hardware replacement, that's all on Asus (with the exception of barebone units).

As of this date, BIOS 406 file is still corrupted, and has been since before Xmas. ASUS supposedly promised an uncorrupted release w/in a week of being notified (before Xmas), but the Winflash unility still is saying the file is not a BIOS file. Tried both the "Global" and "China" d/l links--no joy.

If you have somehow managed to get your hands on an uncorrupted version of the 406 BIOS, I know I--and many, many, many G1G owners--would appreciate it. The popping sound is driving us nuts.

4.06 doesn't fix the problem - neither does the latest realtek drivers. I have both - the popping sound is less - but still there.

Does everyone (every owner) have the popping noise, or just some?

The only way the popping noise disappears for me is to uninstall realtek hd audio drivers and use native vista hd audio drivers - but then the external sound ports and eq functions do not work. Not a good option.

So don't hold your breath for 4.06 fixing things - it doesn't.

    i have the pop.

once every two minutes or so. not the end of the world, but hey, if you paid $2400 for gear you'd expect to not have this "special feature".

So what do you suggest can be done about this? I mean I understand that a laptop with these specs at this price is a bargain but it's still not "that" cheap, and I expect to get a working machine when I buy it brand new. I bought two Dells before at half the price and they didn't have these problems. This is really frustrating, I'm contemplation on returning the laptop at this point.

I had the same problem with the screen, went to the store I bought the laptop and they told me I had to deal directly with asus, so I called their tech support and they said I had to send the laptop to the service center or I could go myself there, I decided to go there and the guy on the service center told me they were going to give me a new computer but that would take around 1-2 weeks or that they could change the screen only and that would take around half hour. (I decided to do the second option since I didnt have any other issue than the pixel on the screen and i didnt want to risk to get another computer but with the fan issue or something) They changed the screen in that moment and was looking perfect (even the cloud on the screen dissapeared)

Thanks, I will look into this as well. Nice to know that at least it's not a harware issue.

I would have no problem doing so but only if I was able to come in and get it done. Unfortunately I'm in NY and going to Cali for this is out of question. I'll give them a call later in the day, and if it comes down to it I'll send them the laptop in exchange for a new laptop. Is there a way I can make sure that the laptop they're going to send me is brand new? There is no way in hell I will settle for a refurb.
