Maybe this has been discussed already, but I'm having problems with my G71GX and an external 1TB WD My Book. I'm having trouble using the WD when connected to the laptop via eSATA. At first the HDD works fine but after a short while it just stops responding. Or if it's left to spin down it doesn't wake up. I guess it's some kind of power related issue. It works fine with the USB, but the speeds are much lower.
I have another, older laptop - HP and the drive works flawlessly with it, so I'm assuming it's the Asus esata controller that is not doing the job.
I would appreciate any help and advice.

Do you have the eSATA drive connected to an external power supply?

Have you tried reinstalling the eSATA driver?

Actually no. I haven't installed any eSATA drivers specifically and I was wondering if the Intel ICH10R AHCI Controller driver in the Device Manager is responsible for managing the eSATA? The other one I see is the Ricoh OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller, but I think it's responsible for the Firewire.
