Given the components put into the laptop (sturdy case, 7200RPM hard drive, high end video), it makes sense the actual screen would be a TN TFT panel. At top brightness, I wouldn't be surprised with some brightness deformation.

I came from a Gateway MX8739. 17.1" screen. Also a TN panel. Trust me, the Asus model's panel is quite tolerable. :)

You should look at the MSI GT725, it comes with the faster Mobility Radeon HD 4850 graphics card.

My screen is pretty darn nice...on a black screen I saw what might be a bit of cloud (left side to middle) but I don't notice it with anything on the screen - it may just be something i need to clean off.

Ok, couldn't this be affected by the angle at which you're looking at it? Have you noticed it regularly or it was a one time thing?

I have had this problem with additional clouding on the right of the screen too. I RMA'd it and they replaced the screen (along with the mouse touchpad). They just shipped my G71G-A1 back today, so I will keep you up to date to see if the clouding issue has been fixed.

I shipped RMA'd and shipped out my G71G-A1 on Feb. 13th, and I got it back on Feb 25th as they shipped FEDEX ground on accident both ways instead of FEDEX Standard Overnight. They replaced my LCD Screen with a brand new one, but still a small cloud is visible (considerably less noticeable than the previous):

Thank guys for the post. screen quality is the biggest concern to me. I am thinking to place order today for g71g-q2. please give some other comments before I order. I really need some good 17" or bigger laptop with excellent screen quality with dual lamps and good graphics card, price no issue. if anyone has some other laptop in mind please share your valuable opinion.

I've been using my G71G-A1 since I've received it back and I'm very satisfied with the LCD Screen quality (I had high expectations before receiving it and was surprised of how crisp/clear and vibrant the colors are as I was going to move onto another notebook if I wasn't satisfied). Jaivipin, a Q2 is a very good choice as I've got a huge itch to get a quad core in my notebook too. The cloud is note noticeable when viewing the screen for daily and nightly use. I've already had other people compliment on how nice the notebook and clear the screen looks.

I attempted contacting the LCD Screen manufacturer and all I received was this:

    From AUO:

    "Dear Sir,

We have signed warranty contracts about all the products with our partners.
Your problem seems to be caued from notebook itself, please contact with ASUS, whether the products have problem in driven IC.

    Thanks.

    AUO Info."

I purchased an ASUS G71G-A1 notebook brand new from a retailer on January 2, 2009. Out of the box, the B170UW02 V0 LCD screen had a large visible cloud on the screen. I RMA'd the notebook and an ASUS repair facility (ContactPC in Littleton, CO, USA) replaced the screen with a brand new one. I received the replacement, and out of the box, the new replacement B170UW02 V0 still has a small white cloud visible in the center left of the screen. Here is a picture: http://i691.photobucket.com/albums/vv271/darith27/LCD-quality.jpg Has there been a response or a solution to this matter of product quality assurance? I hope to hear from you soon! Sincerely, Darith Yim

    ---

Conclusion: AUO claims it is the result of the ASUS G71G notebook design that causes the clouding result.
