I've been building computers since 2005 and I've never used anything but ASUS motherboards, I love there products, but I've never had the chance to play with one of their laptops. So i'm looking into buying the Asus G72GX RBBX05, will this let me play my games, such as WOW, CS:S, and Battlefield Bad Company 2(when its released). I have a powerful desktop, but when I travel, I would like a powerhouse along my side. So I was wondering if this laptop is ideal for what I want to do with it. Also, I noticed that there are LED lights on the lid, is there a way to turn those off? My monitor is an Asus VW246H-HDMI, I'm curious if I connect my monitor via HDMI to the laptop, could I close the laptop and continue to use it as if it were docked?
Thanks for your input!

I've been looking over that review and it has some very helpful information! Thank you. I have yet to stumble across someone saying that the led lights on the lid can be turned off.
I've also seen some comparisons with the Gateway P-7915u FX. I have no experience with Gateway and have no idea how their tech support and how good their warranty is. So now I'm stuck on those two laptops, the Gateway is more expensive $50.00 dollars, which isn't a big deal.
I do like how the Gateway doesn't have any external led lights(they just get annoying) and its sleek design + colors. Although, the Asus, minus the external led lighting, has a lighted keyboard, more RAM, bigger hard drive, better screen resolution, and I trust the Asus name more-so than Gateway(?).
So as you can see, I'm still confused over which would be a better choice for myself, I am of course leaning towards Asus just because I know more about that company.
Any personal opinions?
Again, can the led lid light be turned off on the Asus laptop? -
the LED lights on the lid can not be turned off with a button, only way is to take the screen face apart and disconnect its power.

Well then I'll just have to deal with it, atleast its not like ASUS G Series G51Vx-X3A with what it looks to be like tribal designs on the lid, its eye candy and cool, but not really necessary.
Last question, hopefully, if I connect my monitor to it via HDMI and close the laptop lid, could I basically use the laptop as a desktop and just run everything off it? As if it were docked? My brother has an Apple macbook pro and he just plugs his 24" monitor into it(with an apple connector), along with mouse and keyboard, shuts the lid and its a desktop computer. -
I dont see why not, but their have been issues with some G Series laptops not working beyond 15 minutes with the lid closed... so you may encounter issues with that... I am not sure though about the 72 model though.

You could also connect your monitor with the vga out port.
You would probably have to open the lid to turn the notebook on, or setup "wake on lan" in the BIOS.
ASUS is the best brand for notebooks, great quality and service.
There is nothing wrong with Gateway, but ASUS is better. -
I'm not sure about Asus being the best brand for notebooks. I'm an owner of a G71GX and I'm fighting every week with a new issue. Pretty much every new model they release has some kind of issues, just wondering how so many people are preordering the G73, throwing themselves in the unknown.

I love my G72GX.... A lot more than my old gateway. Here's my review at a different site.

I must agree with Tobuk. It's best laptop I've ever owned.
