I am thinking of getting the G73JH and know how great it is for gaming. It will be my only computer and I will have to use it for work as well, is the keyboard good for typing? I seem to remember reading some mixed reviews on this score so wonder if you can comment from your experience please.

    Many thanks

    Gerry

Some people seem to really not think very highly of the keyboard, but I think it's great. It is a bit different than some keyboards and takes a bit of getting used to.

    Gerry,

My first unit had no trouble at all. My replacement unit has some little oddities when typing. The touchpad can pick up a movement and sometimes throw your cursor off. Some people have received a unit that doesn't type "t" or "space" very accurately. Even on my replacement unit it's not bad. I use and external mouse/keyboard whenever I am in the office though, so it's not a deal killer for me.

How many of these threads do we need asking about the keyboard?

I think if you just hit Fn+F9 to disable the touchpad for work, you'll be quite happy. Basically any time you have a mouse hoked up, just disable the touchpad.

So far so good here - I have configured the touchpad to ignore accidental palm presses as well as automatically disabling itself when I have an external mouse connected. I don't experience any lag about which some other folks are referring. I love the chicklet keys and type in excess of 60 wpm. Once I got used to the layout of some of the keys, I have had no problems.

It's definitely not the best keyboard that I've used. But it works OK. Of the notebooks I've owned, this does have the greatest amount of keyboard flex.
Had 2 Gateway, 1 Mac, 1 Sony, 1 Acer and 2 ASUS. All of them had decent keyboards, but this one doesn't register all my button presses and takes more force to type on.

It isn't a huge problem, but I am wondering if I should call ASUS and see if they can send a replacement keyboard. If it's too much problem, maybe I'll just press my keyboard harder.

I like chiclet keyboards but Asus makes desktop motherboards. Aren't they just outsourcing whoever makes the keyboards? They're always cutting corners.

If these things are made in China, who would they be outsourcing them to? India? Africa?

I returned a Asus G60JX because of horrible flexing on the keyboard. The G60 & G73 use the same island style keyboard

I don't have a G73 but I do have a Macbook Pro with the chiclet keyboard.

Assuming it's similar in feel and spacing I think you will like it. The keys take some getting used to but it only took me a little bit since I use it for work (mainly) so I am in email and doc's all the time.

Depending where you live, Taiwan is more or less still China. If you live in Taiwan you have a totally different perspective than somebody who may look at it from across the sea because of the huge mishmash of controversy that surrounds the politics of the region. Its currently a group of islands which collectively have been known since 1945 as the Republic of China. Taiwan once ruled the mainland till the Peoples Republic of China shoved em aside, leaving Taiwan as a sorta sovereign state. They are still arguing back and forth over who's the legitimate group who should be calling the shots in China. You dont see much electronic gadgets coming out of the Schezuan province on the mainland, though they excell in tasty spicy food, its mostly Taiwan dishing out your laptops. Do to Taiwans cheap labor force and industrial infrastructure its been pumping out goods to the west for years, and we've been consuming their stuff with cheap pricetags with gusto. You want to pay $8000 dollars for your G73, have em build you one from scratch in Jersey. Now back to your keyboard thread :D

Not the thread to talk about this, don't even start.

Do you really think Apple makes their keyboard? You think Clevo makes their keyboard?

Do you think Dell makes their laptops? HP?

The biggest problem I'm currently having is not the keyboard, it's the touchpad. It seems to not sit flush on the left side palm rest, and if I get lazy and actually rest my palm on it when typing my screen jumps, text gets selected [I just posted in another forum and halfway through I managed to accidentally delete my entire post]

Normally it's not an issue, since I usually use my mouse with this machine, but I'm starting to wonder if the piece is glued down properly? /shrug

Take it for what it's worth

Taiwan never ruled China, the Chinese Nationalist Party (KTM) did.
Then there was a civil war between the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and KTM.

the KTM lost and fled to Taiwan, then so on
