Is the Asus Gaming Laptop line worth buying? I read more, " My Laptop is doing this doing that threads " then " This is a great laptop to buy. "
So my question is what is going on? Are these laptops good or what? Should i stop shopping Dell and go Asus? Seems like Asus is cheaper for what is inside the Xps's almost.
Please help would really like to get an Asus computer but its hard when all you see is problem threads...
-
I've seen it the same way no matter what thread set you look at, asus, dell, gateway, acer etc...
-
My G50VT-X2 is an amazing laptop. Does everything that I could have ever wanted it to. But yeah, just as Alitronic said, no matter what laptop you buy there's not doubt there will be people saying "F this laptop, it sucks, I hate [Insert Company here] laptops and will never buy them again"
If possible go to Best Buy, Fry's (If applicable), Circuit City and check em out in person -
Ah very ture...lol. This kind of sucks.. I wish that there was just a solid YES this gaming laptop is good and will last.
I currently own a XPS Desktop but would really like to get a Asus Gaming computer because they look great and the price is great. -
You'll see problem threads for every manufacturer (I previously thought the same about Dell), but I have to say that even the lowly G50vt-X1 is an amazing machine. Personally my biggest complaints are the vertical viewing angles of the screen (horizontal angles are great) and the short battery life (about 2 hours on moderate usage).
The loud styling is a little much, too, but the specs to price ratio makes up for all of that. It's not often you find a $1K machine that can plow through Oblivion and pretty much every Source game out there. Crysis handles fine on High and great on Medium settings.
Build quality is superb, software support is great (I love the ExpressGate thing, basically a built-in customized version of Linux), there's no "FREE INTERNET HERE!" links, it comes with recovery disks AND a hidden partition, two hard drive bays with RAID support, "bloatware" is only by Asus and some of it is actually useful (Direct Console allows overclocking-- does that even count as bloatware if it does that?), HDMI out, etc. etc.
As for problems, I have none to speak of. I was afraid the lost keystroke issues would pop up with my machine but I have yet to see any evidence of them whatsoever.
And besides, the little OLED screen is great once you customize it! You can make it do anything once you set it up. I have mine flipping through 3 different screens of info
As a side note, maybe I'll write up a review within the week...
I wouldn't say to stop shopping Dell, but rather to put Asus on your list as well especially once they go on sale. -
Sounds like a good idea Frostbite, I should check out bestbuy i hear they have the G50 laptops but i was looking to get a 17" one. They have one at Newegg.com but it's kind of pricey but looks like it will run all games out now on high settings if im not mistaken.
It's the G71G X1 Asus... -
I was shopping HP, then went to Dell XPS, and now i just want a nice gaming laptop that i can take with me to friends, school, and around the house. Asus i hear has been around for a long time and they look awsome. AND XPS Laptops are just WAY too expensive for in two years the inside of it to be outdated lol. Asus seems like it has a solid deal with it and not overpriced just for the name.
I'll try to hit up bestbuy to check one out it seems CC doesnt have them. -
Sorry for a 3rd post in a row but i have a question for those of u that own a Asus laptop and wanted to know what games are you playing on it and is it on max settings?
-
from what i've heard and seen in reviews most people are running games like crysis in high settings with no issues, online games such as wow and warhammer online 30+ fps in full screen.
-
I bought my G1S in January of '08, I probably should have waited and learned a little bit more about graphics cards and laptop heat and so on, but this laptop has never let me down. I have dropped it multiple times from 3+ feet with no problems, and it was running. The defective graphics card was something I should have read about, but that is my fault. They have a strong build quality, and I will definitly buy an ASUS next.
-
I used to be a dell user all the time but they did not have a gamers 15 inch laptop. The 1530 is the closes and it has an 8600 gt witch is a ok card for older games. I bought the g50vt- a2 and have been very happy with it. I play wow on max resolution without a glitch and I also play left 4 dead on it with max resolution and 8x anti with no slowdowns. The only game that gave me grief was crysis and it was on high first then had to bring some options down to medium because I got slowdowns with lots of action. I got the second part but I have yet to install it. Been playing to much wow. Hope that helps
-
I love my G50vt-x1, it plays Fallout 3 - max res, everything maxed, even aa and af maxed and gets 60+ fps, Oblivion same deal, All Source Games maxed out with 16x aa and 16x af with 60fps+, Bioshock maxed out with aa and af 60fps+, this machine is effin amazing, would recommend to anyone looking for a budget gaming pc.

My year old Asus G1S is still going strong!
I've been playing all kinds of games on it, old and recent without any problems, so even though it has a 8600M GT it's still pretty capable.
I just recently upgraded it to 4 Gigs of DDR2 800 Mhz RAM and it really shines on extensive applications like Adobe Premiere Elements and Adobe Premiere Pro for example.
Cheers!

I play COD4 at max settings (65ish FPS), CSS at max settings (130ish FPS), and COD:W@W at max settings (60 FPS). I have the X2 which is 1680x1050 resolution. If you get the X1 (1366x768 if I'm not mistaken) it'll play all games maxed out for a while (Crysis is always the exception...any maybe GTA IV)

I am on my second Asus G series laptop, and have had a great experience.
I got my first one, a G2P, in February of 2007. It was big, powerful, and stylish, it ripped through games from that time, and was still small, quiet and light enough to bring to classes. It shipped with XP, and came with a free upgrade to Vista. And, as always, came with the Asus 2 year warranty and a 0 dead pixel guarantee. Great computer, and still usable - thus I am reformatting it for my dad to use.
This Christmas, I got a new lappy, and I immediately went back to Asus - a Macbook was too expensive for an OS I didn't want, Dells and HPs are dwindling in quality and pronounced dead in support, and no custom-built laptop from any builder looks quite so... sexy.
I am pleased to report that, except for a noisy fan which is a known isssue, I am extremely pleased with my new Asus G71G-A2. The processor is great, and can effortlessly handle the 10% overclock from Turbo Gear, there is plenty of speedy RAM, the dual 7200 RPM hard drives are fast to say the least, the screen is fantastic, the blu-ray drive is very nice to have and compliments the screen, and I lile the touchpad, keyboard, and OLED screen even more than the ones on my G2. The 9800GS M will play the new Source games (left 4 dead, HL2 EP2, Portal) on max settings (with 16QxAA, 8xAF) at 1920x1080 40-80 fps. That is incredible for a laptop. I'm about to run 3dmark Vantage, and I'll post back with that score. -
Well, Thanks for all of the help guys. I just need my XPS desktop to sell then i will be ordering an Asus Laptop from Newegg.com and or Bestbuy.com whom ever has the better deal and stats i want.
Thanks again and please keep up the posts i like to hear the positive things about owning the Asus laptops. Pictures and Videos would be awsome too if possible. -
I have a 2+ year old G1 and it's still going strong. I had a little trouble with overheating but I think it was just from dust accumulation. I called Asus up, sent it in, and had it back to me in under two weeks running as well as it did right out of the box. The warranty for it is amazing I still have a year left of parts and service plus they couldn't be any easier to deal with. They didn't argue with me, make me jump through a dozen hoops, or tell me I was doing something wrong just said send it in, we will pay for shipping and got it back to me a week before I expected it.
The only thing I thought would be annoying was not having an OS CD but the recovery disc was very easy to work with, probably easier than a full format and reinstall.
I'm just about to pull the trigger on a new laptop and I'm going to sell my old one to a friend of the family because I don't see any reason to decommission it before it's time. -
Youtube has a lot of gaming clips from Asus gaming laptops.
-
I had a Gateway P-6831FX which I loved a lot, but It went walking in the Brussels train station. I now have a g50vt-x1 and it's stellar. I haven't had it long enough to report on wear and tear, but it hasn't started life with any hardware issues. It's a fine machine at a fine price. and I have no complaints about the resolution. It's a fair price to pay for the gaming performance you get.
-
Does anyone play World of Warcraft on their Asus if so what model and stats is your laptop? and what are you FPS? with Hiigh settings?

Back to the G50VT-X1--BestBuy has it for $1,050. Now that deal is practically impossible to beat. ( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...g50vt&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1218012519873 )
Ultimately you will be wanting a faster laptop in about 2 years almost no matter what you get. (The newest Radeon 4870 cards will last a bit longer, but you can't actually get a laptop with one yet, and they will be more than twice the price of something with a 9800M I expect.)
Good luck with your new rig! -

Wow, thanks for all the posts guys. Is this 15" screen one really big? cause people say it's just like having a 17" lol. I am going to try and go see one before i order at bestbuy.

Good thread. I'm thinking about getting an X71 from Amazon. I'm wondering how much bloatware is included with an Asus.
-
-
-
Except for Norton Internet Security which is a trial but should be wiped off as early as possible because of how much of a pig it is.
-
Norton is no good?
You can burn CD's and DvD's with this laptop too correct? -
The problem with bloatware is that even if you do uninstall it, it will probably leave lots things behind such as registry entries, locked files, drivers etc.
When I got my Asus G1SN, I did a clean install because I was installing XP instead of staying with Vista.
However, I would have still done a clean install because that way you can be sure only what you need is installed and nothing unwanted will be left behind. -
-
I have a G50V-x1 I got from newegg. It runs BF2 COD4 and COD:WaW all at max settings without any problems. Just as others in the thread has said the cost vs value is unmatched.

On another note, I have always disliked Norton. I think a lot of that originated from the days (not too long ago) when they used to only issue definition updates once a week. But still, there is far better AV software out there that is less resource intensive, and can be cheaper if you wait for the sales. -
Man i hope i can sell my Dell XPS desktop now..lol I want a Asus G71G X1 REAL bad now.
Thx for all the info guys..
What is a better AV software i can get? Iv always used Norton. -
I do however have a Vmware virtual disk I use to test any suspect files, my wireless I use through my Desktop that has Antivirus, firewall, router etc and I also use disk snapshots for backup (Drive Snapshot) and scan mounted completed images for any issues threats etc. -
I bought a g71-g just before Christmas, I've since added another 320 gig hard drive, total of 640, and 2 more gigs of ram for a total of six gigs. I still haven't run any games on it, but it is an outstanding laptop. I was going to buy a macbook pro but I've never owned a mac and talked myself out of it and used the money to get the best laptop for the price.
I'm very satisfied with the machine and Im looking for a bd combo disk to upgrade that, but I may go for an external. -
I bought my G50V in August. Since it has been superceded by the G50Vt. THe only problems I've had was all the bloatware it came with, so I did a clean install with the recovery disks. The second was merely yesterday where the MBR and Boot went screwy but this was not of fault on Asus but more Vista. The thread is floating around somewhere. However, I am pleased with this laptop, sure I've noticed that Asus' battery life on their notebook products is somewhat lower than competition, but I don't mind since I keep this thing tethered up to a power outlet 95% of the time. And I've never had to deal with Customer service and I take that as a good thing. Though, I have only heard good stories of them. I strongly recommend their products.

I purchased a G71G-A2 just before christmas and other than the fan issue (which is mentioned elsewhere in these forums and on this thread as well) and a badly mounted webcam (my opinion and mentioned in other threads by me and confirmed by at least 1 other person) the machine is *amazing*. For a desktop replacement I would recommend it hands down.
I almost had an Alienware m15x but I had second thoughts when I started reading more on the hinge issue it is well known for and thankfully Dell Financial Services is a pain in the and needs to confirm all Alienware orders in triplicate and after a blood and hair sample is submitted - I ended up canceling the order and within the same week found this machine had surfaced. Knowing that ASUS had been around for quite some time as a mobo manufacturer and had an excellent reputation, I decided to take the plunge. Needless to say, I've played older games to newer games (Q3, UT2004, Far Cry, UT3, BioShock, and Left 4 Dead) all with MAXED RES and MAXED graphics settings (that is ALL graphics settings) and only had 1 or 2 slowdowns so far and I would more attribute those more to standard lag than anything else.
Finally, compared to the Alienware, I got this machine for over 700 LESS and it has a better warranty and similar specs and it does everything I was looking for and then some. -
I look forward to getting an Asus gaming laptop and deff. want the G71G-X1. Does anyone have this model? If so any problems with it? I will be ordering from Newegg because i want the included Asus bag.
I do however have one more question. With my XPS desktop i never have to manually update anything there are auto updates like once a month from dell, norton, ect ect. With the Asus laptop i hear that people need to updat Bios and stuff ( Nor sure what that is ) but shouldn't that auto update when there is a new one available like my desktop does? -
Sorry guys i have another question. About Newegg.com and the return policy. If you don't like the laptop you get you are stuck with it? they only take back a defective one? It kind of confuses me that if you buy something and your not happy with it you cannot return it? Is newegg's service good or what?
-
Newegg's service is usually very good, however, when it comes to laptop returns they are very much lacking in that department. Most retailers and resellers will offer a time period for refunds/returns even if there is no defect, but in Newegg's case, they have a non-refundable policy.
I'd strongly suggest purchasing any Asus laptop from authorized Asus resellers such as Gentechpc as they not only have a refundable policy, but also offer additional technical help. -
Gentechpc doesn't have the G71G-X1 :-(
or
I don't see it lol. -
I believe the models with the X suffix are only sold by large retailers/etailers like BB and Newegg.
