After poking my head into the Dell forum and drooling about the upcoming Adamo, only to be deflated by the shocking high price for something subpar in performance, I see Asus is joining the club.

Does this make sense? I would figure based on the economic recession that these kind of high end notebooks would not be worth the R&D and marketing to push. I can see Sony with their Vaio Z but Sony tends to be popular among exec types and I doubt the Z is a big product for them in sales.
Your thoughts?

Asus is basically just getting started here in america, they do a lot more business in asian countries, where i dont know, but i think the economy is fine.

Asus is a Taiwanese company and is huge in Asia as MasterShake89 mentioned; particularly in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
The UX30 will not be overly expensive such as the Dell Adamo, and will probably be in the price range of ~$700-$800. It's a direct competition to MSI's X320, so it'll stay relatively affordable for the consumer. Also note that in the second link you provided, they mentioned the price is £999 inc VAT. This usually translates to around USD $850 in the US (exchange the "£" with "$" and minus 15% for VAT); retail prices in the EU are usually a lot more compared to the prices in the US. -
Also I would severely doubt the UX30 is going to be $850. GentecPC sells the U20 for $969.00 (identical specs except for a 12.1 vs 13.3" screen) and that is not an all aluminium body notebook.
This guy does agree with you though and has some nice pics of it:
