I have been using this laptop for about 2 weeks now and really really like it. The only thing I do not like is the fan noise. The fan runs a lot, even sometimes when the screen is off and it is idle. It even runs when I first boot up. It comes on real quick and then goes off real quick frequently too. Is anyone else experiencing this? This does not seen right to me.

I have read reviews and some people say it is silent most of the time. Mine is definitely not silent most of the time.

"Relatively silent" is more like it. The CPU fan always spins, as far as I know, but should spin at low RPMs and produce very little noise, consequently, while on idle. Ambient temperature and the type of surface you keep the laptop on can affect this, as can the "paste job" from factory.

I am running into the exact same problem! Fan is pretty loud during idle, while temperatures are very good. Sometimes the fan does shut down, but within seconds it starts spinning again. At idle this cycle of starting and stopping repeats itself over and over again and is _very_ annoying. Did anyone find a fix for this problem?

I'm using balanced power, but I've tried power saving as well, with no luck

You could investigate and see if Intel XTU would allow you to under volt.

I just purchased this laptop as an open box deal from Newegg. I am running into the exact same problem. I absolutely love the laptop beside this problem, and it can get very annoying at times. I contacted ASUS support and all they told me was they were afraid it was a hardware problem and I should return it. That really isn't an option for me, as since the laptop was an open box deal, getting my money back would force me to purchase a much more inferior laptop. I contacted them again asking for a possible fix and not a simple return option, but they have yet to get back to me. I'd really like to solve this problem, as it is simply annoying. I also noticed that a similar problem occurred with one of their previous laptops, so I've been browsing that forum for a fix that might also work on this laptop. What's weird is it didn't even happen for the first couple of days. I believe that it could be a hardware problem, but because this problem has appeared in the past, and because other users have complained about it, it seems like something that could be dealt with in the software.

I managed to fix the problem completely :) Download this third party utility: https://github.com/hirschmann/nbfc/releases
I have an older version than is posted there, so I don't know whether the author has added the K501LX yet. But if it hasn't been
added yet, from inside the utility select the Asus Zenbook UX32LN instead (has a similar two fan cooling system). Use the default settings for that profile
and tick the "Fan control service enabled" checkbox if it hasn't been ticked already. I've ran my laptop through several stress tests (Prime95, Games, Furmark, Furmark + Prime95) and
the temperatures are all completely normal. Of course, with this heavy load the fan will have to ramp up and it does. But more importantly, during
low loads the fans are completely silent. Temperatures are also way within normal ranges.

Please keep an eye on your temperatures via an utility like HWmonitor: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html
Just to be safe and check whether the cooling still works properly. :) Please let us know if this solves the issue for you as well. Good luck!

Thanks so much Musho! The program has fixed the annoying fan problem. For the last few days temps have been decent, around the low to mid 40s. However, after doing some more demanding work, I've run into upwards of 50 degrees. I turned the fan on to 100%, but my temps continue to stay around 50 degrees. That's not a huge problem, as the laptop isn't even getting hot at that point, but it is an inconvenience and a worry to have to check my temps all the time. I'm afraid I will forget at some point and temps will soar. What are your average temps in day to day to mid demanding, to very demanding (like gaming)?

Also, how does your Notebook FanControl program behave? Mine never shows a current fan speed, although sometimes I can hear the fans kick up a little bit. I will run a stress test soon when I have time to verify temps under heavy load, but it would be greatly appreciated to have the results of another user to determine a good normal.

    Thank you very much!!

    Hello
I just running into the exact same problem as stated above. My fan running all the time from the start-up.
Also, the program has fixed the annoying fan problem for me as well.
Anyway, I just want to know that this fan-problem is normal for this laptop or is it hardware failure or anything else? If i remember correctly this wasn't happen when i just purchased (I'm not so sure). Will this fan-problem go away if i claim it with asus? It kind of far from my home to asus service.

    Thank you very much
And sorry for my bad english

After contacting ASUS Support, they automatically say it's probably a hardware issue. To me, it seems like a software issue since installing a program simply fixes the problem. However, there could be an issue with some temperature monitor or something. If you have the time, it would probably be worth getting a new machine from ASUS if it's still under warranty. If for whatever reason you're like me, and you don't want to return the laptop, just keep running the program and watch your temps. If anything gets too hot for you, just manually set the fans to something through Notebook Fancontrol.

I'm getting 77 degrees celcius on the hottest CPU core and 76 degrees celcius on my 950m while gaming. I consider these temperatures excellent, and personally I wouldn't worry unless they get above 90 degrees. I'm very happy with these temperatures and I am very happy with the completely silent laptop during light tasks, because the fans are completely off for me. Since I have a SSD installed, there are no moving parts in the laptop, so I can't hear it at all. After this program, this laptop is perfect for me.

You guys should repaste and undervolt the CPU.

I have my K501UX at -0.80mV on the CPU, dropped 5-6'c along with re paste.

Completely normal for this model. At least, the fans are not that noisy. I have heard fans that are way louder.

Just want to update my laptop got replacement.
The fan still loud but it make different kind of noise ..... (loud fan seem to be normal for this model) and the harddisk of new one also make the clicking sound occationally (tack tack tack ... and its quite rare, once per 3-4 hours) ... **** me ...
Is that normal? bc my asus service center said so (i dont believe them at all .... )
    At least its still functional.
