I need more storage for my K50 and was wondering what others used. At least 500MB, but a TB would be great if there's a model that works. Any recommendations, or makes to avoid?

You will find strong opinions here and elsewhere both in favor and against every single major drive manufacturer, so your question is fairly irrelevant. Stick with any major player (i.e. Seagate, WD, Toshiba or Hitachi) and you should be fine, or follow your own preferences.

The thing to be careful about with the 1TB drives is that the current crop are not yet the standard 9.5mm height, but are 12.5mm - these do not fit into every notebook chassis out there. Everything up through 640MB is standard 9.5 and will fit fine.

I remember when 12.5mm was the standard, and the 9.5mm were the slim drives. :)

Mine's got the Seagate Momentus 320GB, which is 9.5mm so it's likely the 12.5mm won't fit.

Not necessarily - manufacturers only put in 9.5mm drives because that's what they're buying in bulk.

The key is how much space is available between the top part of the drive shell and the lower chassis ... i.e. the new MacBook Pro's have extra room that will let it fit if you swap in the 1TB drive, but other notebooks, including the regular MacBook white have a much tighter distance that won't accommodate the 3mm increase.
