Asus K53SV Extreme Mod Help

Hey guys,
i am enhancing my asus K53SV ( i7 2630qm) with an eGPU GTX 1060 and im planning to buy a better CPU to reduce the CPU bottleneck on the 1060. At the moment, i have a 130W power supply ( 90W stock). I bought a Destkop CPU Cooler ( Cooler Master Hyper T2) to handle the CPU temps and im wondering if a 2960XM would overclock to lets say at least 3.5GHz on 4 cores stable for gaming. I know the stock BIOS wont allow the 2960XM to work but i will update the CPU Microcode to make it accept the 2960XM. So here are the questions :

1- Does the CPU microcode Mod really works ?

2 - Can the motherboard handle more than what is was made for (90W PSU) ?
The 130W works fine with the pc at the moment.

3- is a minimum of 3.5GHz on 4 cores stable possible with the 130W PSU ?

 

You will need to mod the Intel ME firmware with FITC to allow overclocking on that chipset, if its possible at all.

I have an N53SM and I tough about a X series CPU, I have unlocked my BIOS, updated micro-code, and the oROM's for SATA and the LAN, but after spending sometime on techinferno and annoying Prema and Klem I decided to not waste 300€ plus on a CPU. I also tried an Ivy Bridge and the laptop boots up and I could ear windows login sound, but no image at all, Klemm said that most likelly it would need GOP drivers on the BIOS to initialize the iGPU because its different from the Sandy Bridge, if you can grab a cheapo i3 Ivy bridge and see if shows image with the eGPU, but, an high end Ivy will cost almost the same or more, and besides the smaller die, it will have the same limited TDP and similar clocks.

If you want guaranteed performance go for the i7-2860QM, it offers you 3.4Ghz under 4 core load.

The CPU itself only uses 45Watts, make that 50 to account for the Vreg's, the 130Watts PSU is totally overkill when you have the GPU disabled/not used.

The 2860QM will also allow you to run 1600Mhz memory, that might help a bit.

But keep in mind that buying the CPU and maybe faster RAM will cost you more than 400€ unless you find some epic deals, if you are in the US you can grab a laptop with a 1050Ti on sale for around 500-550$, or get a decent R5 and mobo and RAM and make a powerfull desktop, but I get you, I'm always thinkering with my laptops.

The mobo only uses the power that it needs, you can't force current into it, you can even use a 230Watts AC, it wont be faster/more stable.

Also, you sure its CPU bottleneck and not PCIe interface bottleneck?

 

Hey man, thank you for your answer After a little bit a research i found out that the chances of overclocking on a "locked bios" are close to none ( just like you said), so i decided to save a little bit more money and buy a Desktop CPU/Motherboard/Memory ^^ ( i will buy a i5 7500 or i3 8350k depending on the price of the motherboard).

Btw you are also right about the CPU/PCIe Bottleneck, of course a 2nd Gen Mobile CPU will bottleneck the GTX 1060 but the limited Bandwidth of the mPCIe interface ( PCIe Express 2.0 x1 = Maximum of 4Gb/s instead of PCIe Express 2.0/3.0 x16 = 64Gb/s i think will also bottleneck the GPU performance (not so much but still))

The i7 2630QM is also capable of running the RAM at 1600MHz ( i have 16GB 1600MHz) ^^
