Hello when for instance running a pc game such as tomb raider I notice that the game freezes for like 1-2 sec then resumes fine. Today the game crashed with the freeze. Other apps such as pcsx2 also encounters this freeze. any idea what is causing this?
ASUS A53SV-EH71 Notebook Intel Core i7 2670QM(2.20GHz) 15.6" 6GB Memory DDR3 640GB HDD 5400rpm DL DVD±RW/CD-RW NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M
So far it seems like it's only happening when using pc games other wise I believe the laptop is working fine I purchased it last week...
I'm about to do a recovery and see if that helps

Yes, that is what I suggest first. But, it does sound like read/write issue with your hard drive. That generally causes freezing.

Also make sure you aren't running on battery or in battery saver/quiet office mode in power4gear.

Edit: ugh tried quantum of solace demo and the videos stutters sound is fine but the video stutters >_< -
Hi I'm having the exact same issue with my Asus K53SV, i7 2670QM | GT54M I bought this one for about a month ago.
When i'm playing games my computer freezes randomly for about 2-5 seconds.
And also sometimes i cant see my LAN card as if it doesnt exists. A reboot usually solve that problem tho.
I have tryed with both win7 home and win7 pro both 64Bit.
And i have tryed using both the drivers from Asus own home page and the drivers from the hardware manufacturers.
But none of them seem to solve the problem.
Please notify me if you find a solution thanks. -
Is your K53SV came with Western Digital Hard drive? -
Yes it is a 750GB Western Digital.
WD750BPVT
WD Scorpio Blue. -
Just a quick update so far it only freezes with pcsx2 for like 2 sec an it workd fine. Every other apps work great I upgraded to the asus nvidia driver 290.47 and that seems to make it work better. I have not tried the latest 295.73 nvidia driver as yet...

Here a K53TA owner with WD Green 500Gb drive:WDC WD50 00BPVT. Same issue its auto spindown which causes random freez, as you can hear the head spining up again and the graphs of Resource manager says so too. Freez occour while disk is idle for some times, irrespective of your power plan or Hard disk Power management.
Most annoying during browsing and light gaming -
It's the WD's Intellipark feature that many people complaining about, it park the head every few seconds and causing lag while gaming.
Try use quiethdd to disable AAM and APM and the problem should go away:

Edit: Is it safe to use quiethdd all the time with aam and apm disabled? Will it damage the hdd? -

At last found a program that works : AAM/APM Control for HDD in CrystalDiskinfo 4.2.0
AAM/APM Control
confirm working on both my WD scropio blue internal and Elements SE, Full manual control over Acoustic and power management -
-
it has a startup feature which adds a task to windows task scheduler
just check start up, Prety neat can run without a installation
Resident , Resident style hide : which closes it to tray, and trun off tray temp icon
very well written little program
my drives default apm state is 60H which is reads minumum power consumption with stand by on, I changed it to 80H i.e minimum Power without standby. or FEh which is high perfromance or full platter speed at the cost of power draw
check the above posted link -
Ugh another dumb question sorry :/ you said you set yours to 80h, if I set mines to full performance is that okay or is the safe setting 80h?
-
If you are on AC power than just leave it at high perfomance
for extended use or on battery i recomend 80h -
Did you test games to see if the lagging issue goes away? -
yea thats why i posted it here, no more lag during browsing and source engine games
-
Thanks mate! -
Hello Everyone
This post made some hope but I have not been able to solve my issue.
Details:
ASUS Notebook K53SV, K3SJ Series
Intel Core [email protected]
6GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M
I tied with solutions suggested, quiteHDD and AAM/APM Control.
My problem seems slightly different; I have no freezes but a complete crash every time. Sometimes black screen, sometimes all crazy colours and other just get stuck and I have no other choice than force reboot.
Here some troubleshoot:
-Tested with three latest nVidia drivers, no change
-Tested with quiteHDD and AAM/APM Control, no change
-Occurs after 2-5min. playing a Video Game only, doesn’t happen using other applications
-Doesn’t happen when nVidia Card is deactivated using my On-board (sucks badly) card
Do to this; it seems to be related with the Graphic card in my case? If it was for the HD it should occur as well whilst using my On-board card and playing games with it, right?
I hope someone can help in this case; it’s quite tough investing a lot of money and then not being able to play some nice games…
Any ideas, I am sure someone has had the same issue with this Notebook.
Thanks, Kenny Lee -
i dont know hot to thank you
