    Windows 7 Pro.
    i7-3610QM
    16 gig memory

Every so often it just shuts off.
Ran Prime95 for 10 minutes with no problem.

    Logs are no help.

I had the same with my old k55vj (it was not overheating - check that first but unlikely if you can run prime95 for so long haha). My problem disappeared after exchanging the stock hdd for an ssd. What are the events in event log? If it's only kernel power error then it's purely shutting off as mine did. If there is another one then you might want to look into that and disregard what I say. A clean windows install never hurts on an old system if you haven't tried.
In my case, aside from the hdd possibly causing some issues, we suspect that the power button in that laptop is poorly designed. In my case when fully disassembling for repaste and upgrades, we could not get it to turn on despite everything being properly plugged in. Disassembling again and reseating the cable running to the power button and taping it securely in place did the trick... the laptop is now 3 years problem free after having been a lemon to me with shutting off since new (and asus did not figure it out either and always said everything was ok - after all it only happened once every few weeks and even ran ok for more than a month here and there... there was no apparent trigger to it). So I was stuck with it... So imho, either it was the hdd or the power button but we will never know. You can give both a shot if you are handy with disassembling - the motherboard needs to come out and it's a mess. I imagine that if the power button is not properly seated it might be getting pressed or otherwise activated (long pressing a power button ofc leads to shutting off).

Now it has a new owner (father in law) who still uses it daily for internet etc. It's now 6 years old and running like a champ since being upgraded to a samsung 850 evo and treated with love ^^

PS. if you already don't have the hdd in it and rearranging power button cable etc doesn't help, you might have a different issue. Other stuff I came across when researching back in the day were faulty mb, battery shortcircuiting (unlikely but can try with battery removed), faulty power supply (only likely to cause shutting off if battery is dead too).
    Good luck!
