Anyone know what display is in the A8jm (make and model)? Also curious about the S96j and the upcoming Z96j.

I'm trying to make the call between an Asus and a T60p with 15" FlexView and having a heck of a time doing it, despite spending *way* to much time here reading about both.

    I currently have a T41, and it's upgrade time.

looking for the A8jm and Z96j is hard.. but the S96J uses the following displays:
    AUO B154EW01 (15.4'' wide)
    CMO N154I1 (15.4'' wide)
    CLAA154WA05 (15.4" wide)
    QDI QD15TL02 (15.4'' wide)

none of them will be the same as the IPS screen the T60 uses.. the only Asus model (within the past year) was the V6va.

I'm also interested in the LCD in the A8Jm. Primarily, I'd like to confirm whether it's running a 262K or 16.4M colour display. I was seriously considering the A6Ja until I discovered that it only has a 262K colour TN panel.

I just had a message from Ivan of P1 and it seems that the LCD for the A8jm (and quite possibly for the W3J too) is an AUO model (its also very likely that it's just one out of a number of LCDs being used as companies tend to use a number of manufacturers).

    but the data:

Thanks for the info Goren. Not exactly an outstanding looking panel, on paper at least. Still, I guess it's good enough for use on the go... I'm planning on using a 20" widescreen at home anyway.

no prob! I think most 14" wxga lcds out there..whether its a8jm, w3j, compal hgl30..etc are probably going to have similar specs (if not the same screen).

the manufacturer's response time and viewing angle specs for this lcd, still makes it slightly better than the new AUO 13.3" screen which is most likely the one used by the W7j and Sony SZ (but is less bright)

is the refresh rate really that bad? It doesn't look like 25ms when i play source on the w3j..and this is in comparison to a 8ms desktop panel i still use

    Thanks for the info, Goren!

Unfortunately, this makes my decision even harder. The 15" FlexView screen in the T60P is just as bright (on paper - 200 nits), even though it's a matte screen, and its contrast is better, at 500:1. The only place it loses out (other that perhaps color reproduction, which I'm not at all sure of) is in response time. FlexView has a 30ms response vs. the 25 ms on the 14" on the Asus. Not a huge diff, at that. Of course, the15" FlexView has much better viewing angle at 90/90 vs. the 90/65 of the 14".

If only the FlexView came in 14" and/or the T60p could be had with the NVIDIA card instead of the ATI card (and Fire GL, at that)! OTOH, the A8jm is cheaper by a couple hundred dollars, has DVI out, IEEE-1392, and is lighter and smaller. On the gripping hand, the T60p has a SATA drive and the ThinkPad keyboard (which is both a huge plus for the feel, and a minor down side, for the fact that some keystroke combos only appear to support two key rollover).

    <sigh>

    wow that is interesting

because the response time on the one on the s96j is 16 ms. its also a uo, its the first one goren listed.

it is supposedly not as bright as the a8jm...

after having seen this data i desperately need to see the statistics on the w3j lcd

Yeah, it falls 20 nits short. It also is heavier than and uses even more power than the FlexView on the T60p, plus, its viewing angles are really bad (80/40), and the contrast ratio is worse (300:1 vs. a8jm 400:1 and T60p FV 500:1). I'm not at all certain that the faster response time is enough to matter to me, since gaming is a tertiary use for my machine after general use and software development.

What sucks is that BOE HYDIS doesn't list the color saturation level for the FlexView.

To make things more complicated.. Asus (as well as Compal) and a number of other makers.. use CMO for their screens, as well as AUO. some of the 13.3" and 14" models they have on their site have much better response times

Not that much more compicated... CMO's 14.1" WXGA panel isn't due until Q4 2006 according to their website. Definitely the nicer of the two panels though.
