Hey Guys, so my laptop Asus W3J finally stopped working.

I was playing starcraft 2 on lowest and it finally gave in. I heard a zap sound from the right hand side so i assume it was the video card. It wasn't running that hot at the moment but, i guess it was just too much.

Here is my question. Is there a way to get my my laptop working again, even without the video card. I just want to be able to browse the web and retrieve my mp3's..

Also, if its not possible to turn on again, what are my options on retrieving my files off the hard drive.

When i press the power button nothing happens, no lights, no sounds.

Any help would be great. Thanks!

You can plug-in your hdd to another machine within an external hdd box and get your old mp3s (assuming that your hdd is still alive).

"No lights no sounds" means that something on your motherboard has died. If it was only the graphics card, your laptop should still power-on (but give an error during the POST stage).

It will be quite costly to replace the entire motherboard. I would recommend you to part it out and sell the working pieces (i.e. hdd, cpu, lcd, wireless lan etc.) on ebay and get a new laptop.

Hmmm laptops should not go zap and then die : ) I refuse to believe its dead!

Firstly have you tried removing the battery, DC lead and holding the power button for seconds. Then before putting it back together are you sure its getting power to the Laptop? Is your power block turning on? Make sure the fuse has not blown in the plug. Simple things.

If all is good put it back together and try again. If still nothing cant hurt tearing apart the block and making sure everything is in place. The above poster is right however there should be some sign of life unless the PSU has popped otherwise its a lost cause. It may be something has come loose though and is shorting it out so its worth a look.

Have you dropped it? I dropped my old acer once and the CD drive came very slightly out and was shorting the whole computer just from being like 1mm out of the drive bay wudnt turn on nothing.

If you rule out everything then you might as well whip the HDD out as it may be only 80GB but its a fast HDD and most new ones these days have a spare port that you can put a spare in.

    Fingers crossed for ya!

its wasn't a "zap" like a flash of the screen. I heard it and there was a burning smell.

I took it apart and nothing is loose from wat i can see. and i nver dropped it but i do move it around alot..

If it was just loose, i don't think i would have the burnt smell though..

hmmm you can maybe take your harddrive out and place it in another laptop and copy the files you need.

Or you can buy external hard enclosure and place your harddrive in it and get the information out u need on it.

or buy USB TO SATA & IDE Adapter and get information off the harddrive

if your good at soldering you can re flow the motherboard nvidia graphic cards are faulty on most old motherboards.

oh if you got nothing to loose take it apart to the bare motherboard and place it in the oven to re flow the solder joints.

    google about re flowing motherboards....
