I have an Asus M3 and the c.d. drive has failed. I would like to know if it is possible to reinstall an O.S. not using the c.d. drive? Does this support usb installation?

This would perhaps better be asked on the Windows forum. I would guess there are possibilities to do it from a USB drive, although I have never done it.

    Some suggestions:
    - search google for a guide on how to do it
    - post in the Windows forum (cf. above)
    - borrow an external ODD
    - replace your internal ODD (~50 USD/EUR). Ask me for further instructions if you want to go this way.

Funny you say this "Windows forum" I don't use Windows. I use Linux.

I just want to know if this hardware supports booting from a usb stick.

"- replace your internal ODD (~50 USD/EUR). Ask me for further instructions if you want to go this way." Please share I am curious, I might if I can't do it from the usb.

    Nice picture by the way.

Heh sorry about that I seem to be assuming everyone uses Windows nowadays. This is what monopoly will do to you, tut tut.

What I meant by not having done it, is not having installed Windows from USB. I have run Linux (live) from USB countless times.

So yeah, it will boot from USB device no problem. USB stick or HDD.

See here for some details on the ODD replacement.

Picture is a bit yellow, but it works for a couple of years now. :)

It so did not work. I place a usb 1.1 stick format and tested with other computer and they booted from it but this did not. It shows up in the bios but it does not boot from it.

With some ASUS BIOSes, you need to either:

    a) ESC during POST and then manually select the USB device to boot from
    or
    b) with the USB key inserted, select HDD as first boot device and then go to the list of possible HDDs, where the USB key will (somewhat strangely) be listed, and move the USB key to the first position above the internal HDD.

    Maybe this info helps.

But it is also possible that your BIOS does not support booting from USB...
