I have the Asus M50VC-AS001C. I am running Vista Premium installed by default.

I assume it is 32bit OS. Am I using all 4GB of memory? I hear they say only 64bit OS I use my full potential of 4GB memory.

And is it worth the trouble to load a 64bit OS, or is the speed basicly the same?

    Your advice would be appreciated.

Hello, although vista 32bit supports a theoretical max of 4GB, it will usually only 'see' or be able to use between 3 & 3.5 GB of the 4GB.

Have a look this MS KB article - look at the 'causes' section for a more detailed explanation.

I'm about to purchase the M50VC-AS001C, and plan to upgrade to 64bit - (have just posted a thread about it!) and would be keen to hear how it goes for you should you go down this route!

Thanx, wow a bit technical :) Is it possible to explain in a much simpler way? :)

I'll give it a go (I've spent a lot of time reading about it!)
Essentially Vista 32bit can allocate/read/assign (whatever the correct term is) 4GB of memory. However, your RAM isn't the only memory used on your PC.
So if you have 512MB of Graphics Memory, windows needs to 'assign' 512MB of what it can use for that. There are also a couple of other things that use memory. So therefore, by the time windows tries to add your RAM, it only have 3-3.5 GB of free 'space' to assign it.
If you only had 3GB, 512MB would still be assigned, and all the other bits, which in total come to less than 1GB, therefore windows will still see the full 3GB.

    confusing eh?

    Simple...hmmm...

It all started back in the day with Bill and his programmers. They wrote on x86 and said it is future proof. Nowadays, rams are very cheap and as you can see x86 was not so future proof :p.

    Long story short:

    1. x86 will never use 4GB of memory.
    2. It is limited to 3.12 GB and the remainding is allocated to remaining components. That memory will never be available to the user.
    3. To fully use 4GB you need x64.

OK thanx guys :) I understand bit more now..

So I think technically speaking my laptop will be (0.88GB) faster when I have 64bit OS installed lol :) And I probably wouldnt even notice the difference that much.

Aldredd, if you DO plan to install 64bit OS (and have the time to do it :) which I dont really have :) ), let me know if it DOES really have a big effect or not. Would be very interesting to hear! :)

m394byt3, I will certainly do that. I don't really have the time, but will probably do it anyway - I don't like the thought of nearly 1GB RAM going to 'waste')

I would also be keen to hear how you get on with the laptop as a whole, seeing as it's the exact same model I plan to get. In particular, a lot of users have had keyboard lag problems with some versions of the M50 series and am keen to know if it impacts the M50VC.

    Regards

    David
