    Hi,

I'm looking at buying the Asus M50VM as listed on this website http://www.cpl.net.au/greenguide/20081002-web.pdf (Australian, so it's in Aussie dollars). The price is fine for me.

Here is the image of the advertised laptops for convenience sake.

The thing is though, I'm a bit confused as to why the M50VC is the same price with the only difference I can see being that the graphics card is a 512mb.

    1) Which one should I get? Are they pretty much the same machine (which one is the newer model?) Or are there other differences that I should know about?

    2) What's the difference between the NV G9300 512mb and NV G9600M 1gb graphics cards? Which is better? I really have no idea when it comes to graphics card specs.

    3) Obviously the specs (to me anyway) look excellent. I am needing a laptop for 3D rendering programs and modelling for my course mainly. This laptop will do the job right? Is the processor good or anything else I need to know about them in terms of its speed? It's pretty much the benchmark of what I'm looking for in terms of specs and the price is great they way I look at it.

Help about this would be much appreciated. Sorry if it all sounds really stupid, but I want to make the right decision here.

At plain sight, the differences seem to be:
-M50VM: WXGA+ resolution (1440x900), Vista Ultimate and the 9600M GPU
-M50VC: WXGA resolution (1280x800), Vista Home Premium and the 9300M GPU

The 9600M GPU is the best performer. It surpasses the 9300M with ease. The increased resolution in the M50VM will probably prove useful to you considering your activities.

As to other options from the store, take a look at the BenQ Joybook S42-PE01 and S42-BV01. The processors are not as powerful as the ones in the Asus though.

    Hope it helps!

Thanks a lot for the reply! That's helped a lot. Thanks for clarifying the resolutions too; that was something I forgot to mention. And I plain missed the Vista version differences, but that wasn't a big deal anyway. And the main point I needed to get cleared up was the graphics card, so thanks for the answer!

The Benq ones you mentioned don't really tickle my fancy, but that's OK. I think you just made my decision! Much appriciated. :)
