I have preordered mine and the only thing that I am still not too sure is the screen, because I thought ASUS would use the same panel from previous generation but they switched to another one. Ken from GenTech was kind enough to provide a picture, but I also wanted to hear some owners opinions.
Does it really stand out and can you say it has a bright screen?
Do you have desktop LCD to compare it with?
Highly appreciated!![]()

so many views and not a single response? Didn't anyone receive it yet?

ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
This model's been out for less than 2 weeks, and Asus NA only imported a limited number initially to be distributed to *all* potential retailers/resellers. People are looking (70 views isn't really that much, however, in a big forum like this one) because they think there might be some info about the model here in the thread.
You need to be patient -- it will come eventually once the product gets into owner's hands.
-
it's tough to be patient because my preorder might get shipped in the next few days and while I still have time to change my mind I want to get opinion of people who actually got it. Disappointment will be pricey.
-
I should have mine by tomorrow, unless fedex screws something up. I ordered the day the m50vm came out, but took ground shipping from ca to nj, so I knew it would be a week before I got mine.
-
awesome, would you be able to compare to desktop LCD?
-
Of course i can. My desktop monitor has 300cd/m2, but it still isn't a very good monitor for other reasons.
-
-
to make long story short... I was looking for a notebook with bright screen in 15" package with good balance of power and price. I ordered FW, but wasn't happy with the size and price, then I run into M50SV review (non Montevina) and review stated that panel was super bright at 330 cd/m2. I figured I'll preorder the latest version of M50VM and I don't see why they would change the screen brightness (especially the review stated that M50VM was pretty much unchanged other then updated specs and ExpressGate) if they already had really good one, but based on the specs on the new one screen is only 200 cd/m2... So... I am hoping that screen is in M50VM is as bright as on older M50SV. -
15.4" WXGA+ (1440x900) Glossy Display is a good screen, but not perfect. Prostar M762TU (built on Clevo M762TU) has a better screen of 15.4" (1680 x 1050) WSXGA+ TFT LCD with GlassView Screen and Super-wide Viewing Angles. Compal JHL90 has a better screen, too.
But Asus M50Vm-B1 has the best value and Nvidia 9600M GS w/1GB Video Ram. Although Compal JHL90 uses Nvidia 9600M GT w/512MB Video Ram (GT is better than GS, but 1GB is better than 512MB), Compal JHL90 is more expensive. And Prostar M762TU is cheaper, but the VGA Card is only 9300M GS w/256MB. If you use for business and not much graphics, M762TU can be a good choice. -
well too late now... it was already shipped
-
When do you think Asus will be shiping more models? -
It seems Asus is shipping new models in every week or so. So you don't have to wait that long.
Glover- Actually, the Vram memory amount doesn't really matter. It seems that graphics cards can't even utilize more than 256 MB of Ram in rendering graphics and etc. So really, the 9600M GT is better after all. -

ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
2. Here's how the distribution channel works:
Asus NA in Fremont, CA places an order with Asus corporate in Taiwan.
Units are manufactured and put on a boat to California.
Distribution centers, resellers and retailers place request orders with Asus NA.
Asus allocates received units according to whatever criteria they have/use.
Units are shipped to #3 for sale and/or distribution via drop-ship.
Sometimes Asus NA has shipments of a particular unit coming in every week or so, sometimes it's been more like once a month or less. Resellers might know what's supposed to arrive, but they may/not be able to share that information. The M50 is brand-new, and NewEgg will get theirs in due time as well. Always the same with hot new models, lots of anticipation and anxiety around here (esp during back-to-school season) - understandable really, but everyone needs to be patient.

If it wasn't raining outside, I'd have a picture of it in sunlight.
And for what it's worth, the laptop seems brighter, but it could just be the settings of both that i making the difference.
And the laptop doesn't have massive bleeding like my monitor does; it is almost non-existent.Attached Files:

Although I asked this question some else but I think it fits here better.
Can somebody please inform me about the build quality of ASUS M50 series.
I am really disappointed with ASUS F3JP notebook.
Look here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=276384
I am planning to buy a new one.
The M50Vm looks very interseting, but I would not buy another ASUS notebook, until I am not sure that it is not suffering from many build quality issues.
As the new one is very similar to old M50 series, than maybe some people here can tell me about the expected quality of this notebook.
Price wise, it is having similar price in Germany like the F3jp had when it was released about two years ago, but I hope it does not have similar quality problems. -
-
As far as LCD, I am not really impressed with the brightness yet especially when it everything looks dark, but it could be just that camera is auto adjusting. I'll have to wait for mine to arrive to make the final judgement. -
Can somebody also say something about the fan noise on M50VM?
Is the fan always on?
On my old F3jp, the fan never turns off. It is continuously working.
It only goes from low speed to high speed but never completely off. -
I don't even notice when mine is running, but I know that it does at times because I can feel the warm exhaust on the left side. It is certainly much quieter than my old HP dv6500z.
-
It is a 19" 1440x900 Envision monitor. I think it is http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do...455 Envision G918w1 19 Widescreen LCD Monitor
but I can't find any identifying name on it. All it has is a label with these specs: 1440x900, 5ms response, 300 cd/m2, 160/160 viewing angle wide, 800:1 contrast, vga and dvi-d.
And I know the pictures aren't the best quality. The camera isn't mine.
Damn the keyboard lag, I need to fix this.
The laptop is very very quiet when just using the internet or any other basic task.
My temps are idling at 38-40 for cpu, with a 55-57 max after 15 minutes of orthos. Gpu idles at 55, I haven't had the chance to stress that yet. Hdd idles at 42-43, with a max of 50.
This is in my room, which is significantly hotter than anywhere else in my house. Elsewhere everything was about 4-5 degrees cooler. -

i thought someone said it was Vista thing, although I've been using Vista on many different laptops and none of them were missing keystrokes...

Vista seems to be the host OS to bring out the issue but not all laptops or computers are effected by it.
There have been a few fixes posted. I think it requires turning off some background process that is not needed and it can be done via msconfig.
Hows the speakers guys? Much better than the normal laptop stuff eh? -
i hope that it doesn't bring out in my m50vm
-
Hey... Question to anyone who can answer...
I saw this video review on this site of the m50vm... and apparently they changed the intel wireless chip to an atheros one...
but I see some of you mentioning that you have the intel chip...
anyone know what the both the A1/B1 come with? intel or atheros?
thanks -
-
they can't give you the intel before it's released those will start shipping in laptops next week
-
Nevermind...will post elsewhere.
-
There's an owners lounge and TWO review threads... do we really need another one?
-
Not really, I suggest you move the discussion to the Owner's Lounge.
