I received my M50vm yesterday and have been working through all the threads on low sound and microphone issues, but there isn't a fix for this problem yet:

When I turn the volume up past 50%, my ASUS starts emitting the most horrific, cat-scaring, high pitched noise - and it doesn't shut off - it just continues indefinitely. Terrified, I shut the laptop down and restarted it, only to have the sound begin as soon as Windows started its loading process (with no way to shut it off) until Vista came all the way up. Then I turned MUTE on within Windows itself, but it only made the screeching quieter.

I decided it was probably a microphone feedback issue and disabled my microphone altogether, but I'd like to avoid this from EVER happening again... and be able to use my built-in microphone at some point (because why buy a laptop with this function if it doesn't even work?). However, if my microphone boost isn't turned all the way up, it doesn't register regular volume speech and frequently drops words.

Help! I'm at my wits end and I am *this* close to RMA'ing my laptop.

The M50 series have been known to emit high pitch sounds when you have the USB port closest to the audio jack in use. If you're using that particular port, try plugging in your USB device on the left side ports.
If you don't have any USB ports in use, you could try and update your bios and reinstall the audio driver, but it sounds more like a hardware issue than software. If that doesn't solve the issue, I'd go ahead and RMA your lappy.

David is right there is a known issue with noise in general on the M50 and G50 series, but it sounds like it could be feeding back, this happens when your mic gain is too high and speakers are too loud and a loop between audio input and output is established. If you get this with headphones too, then it is NOT feedback and disregard the rest of this: Try turning your level down on the mic and/or turn the volume of your speakers down. Make sure the mic is muted in your windows mixer when you're not using it.
