I have a M51E notebook with Windows XP installed with no extra add on hardware whatsoever. I ran into a problem a day ago and can not find any solution to my answer.

What happened is I turned on my computer that day and it says
"The file C:\Windows\system32\config\system file is missing or corrupt

and suggested that I put in the Setup CDROM which I did but the CDROM does seem to be working and my computer is just restarting. I only have access to the BIOS setup and have BOOT CDROM to first priority but still not working. I have been having some virus problem for about two weeks but nothing series. Stupid I didnt get it fixed. At least I have stored some important files

There is three results which I will describe.
    1. Without recovery disk. ASUS logo pops up, black screen for a second. Goes to System file corrupted or missing message. Press a key and automaticly restarts. Repeat entire thing.
    2. With recovery disk. ASUS logo. black screen with a blinking dash at top left corner for 4-5 second. Goes to System file corrupted or missing message. press a key restart and repeat
    3. With recovery disk. Asus logo. black screen with a dash at top left corner for 4-5 seconds. automaticly restarts.

I no longer have system restore and recovery CD is my only hope to get it fixed. I can use my cousins desktop for research on how to fix this for a while. I need some expert advice. Whatever assistance will be much appreciated. If anyone can help me get it fixed, he/she could go to sleep knowing he/she saved a 16 year old from the wrath of his parents.

I found my Windows XP disk, not recovery disk. Turns out I am not suppose to use recovery disk. Looked up online and look for some solution. Most still require system restore which I don't have.

I did do recovery console but it is also different from normal
    1. C:\minint
    2. E:\WINDOWS

I went with 2 for windows. I ran dskchk with /p and /r. Restarted computer but still have the same problem. Anyone know how to continue from here?
