    Hi Folks,

just got my new M6Ne notebook and couldn't help but notice that the fan is always turning when the notebook is plugged it. Asus-probe tells me the "idle" cpu temperature is 45 degree with the fan turning at 3000 rpm. If the cpu reaches 60 degree the fan will turn at 3600 rmp and will get rather loud. Even though the fan is not particularly loud, I am a bit disappointed as the reason to get myself a centrino notebook was fan noise mostly. I couldn't find a powergear setting that helps. Is there anything wrong with my notebook or is all this normal? 3000 rmp appears to be a rather high fan speed to me.

Hope you can tell me more, Monty

My M6BNe runs between 43 and 47C for office tasks and browsing. That low speed fan is very quiet, I don't even notice it coming on and off. Still, you can help cooling slightly by applying Artic Silver and by elevating the back of the computer so there is air flow underneath.

If you really want to make sure it runs cooler, set the processor to run at a slower speed all of the time. Powergear should be able to help with doing that. You could also try lowering the clock on the graphics card, if you don't game or use 3D graphics apps, with "ATI Tool" - http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool.

An alternative to Powergear is SpeedSwitch: http://www.diefer.de/speedswitchxp/index.html.

I have experiencing the same problem since I bought my ASUS M6R notebook, so I wrote an e-mail at the asus support center and that's what I got:

    Me:
    I've recently bought a notebook Asus M6R M6722RBH, but I'm
    experiencing a problem and I don't know whether it's a software or a
hardware issue. The configuration comes with a Pentium M 715 processor
and I noticed that the CPU fan never stops. It runs always at ~3000
~3500 rpm, even when the machine is running on battery power. The CPU
temperature at boot is ~48 degrees celsius and reaches 68-70 during
DVD playback. I've set the cpu power management in the bios at
"battery performance", but it doesn't solve the problem. It runs ! at
battery power maximum 2.5 hours (not 4.5 as said in the specifications
in your website). Can you give me some support on this?
I thank you in advance and look forward to hearing from you.
    Sincerely: A. Mitev

The cpu temp is normal, you can enter Control Panel->Power, set Power Schemes as Max. Battery, then try again.

    Thanks four your support.
The power management setting didn't fix the problem with the fan. It
ALWAYS runs, even when the CPU temp is 40 degrees celsius. Is it
normal, or there's a problem with the ACPI or something? I've
installed the latest ACPI driver from your site.

    ASUS
according to the thermal policy of M6R, the cpu fan will start at 45-50 degree C, and turn off at 40 degree C, so it is normal.

    Hi folks,

thanks for your replies. After spending five days with the notebook, I found that the fan sometimes does turn off too. It happens when the cpu temperature drops below 45 degree, a situation that occured rather seldom so far, mostly when doing nothing else than writing a text in Winword. So why all the fuss about the Centrino if the fan keeps running? Is the Dothan-core responsible for this or might I have a bad notebook? If there are any other M6N(e) owners around, please tell about your heat experiences.

My M6800Ne idles at temperatures of 58-59 degrees celcius. The fan does not come on until my computer reaches ~75 degrees celcius. I don't think this is normal.. I upgraded the BIOS and still no change.

Could something be wrong? I thought the fan was supposed to come on at 45 degrees...

I also have a M6R and the fan is also always on 3000 rpm or more, even when the cpu is cooler than 40 C and running on battery with the battery saving scheme.

It is quite noisy and battery consuming !

Welcome to the club of Disappointed Asus Notebook Owners. [ :D]

I'm trying to have my A2D changed to another one, because fan is not working as it should, according to Asus tech support.

Maybe you should try to change it also, then we would know if it's normal fan behaviour or not. I think this fan problem is random, because there are not so many owners who complains about it.

To be honest, I'm not so much disappointed with the weird fan issue... (mine turns on at 75 degrees)... I'm more disappointed with the 2 stuck pixels [xx(]

The ASUS powerGEAR software is bad.
    Just disable it/don't install it.

Intel's own speedstep drivers will work well and keep the machine cool.

My m6800n is running very cool even when running at AC current.
