What happens when you try to turn the system on? Error messages? Beeps?

Also, the particular model of RAM you have, was it listed as compatible for the M6N series? Because technically PC3200 RAM isn't supported...

This kind of sounds like the CPU may not be connected properly or it may be dead. I don't remember notebooks beeping when the CPU was not installed or defective back when I repaired notebooks, but that was a few years ago. If the CPU is in a ZIF socket, there might be a small adjustment "screw". You're supposed to rotate this until the arrow is pointing away from the CPU, that mean's it's tightened. Don't turn a full 360 degrees, just 180 will do fine.
Didn't this unit come with a CPU before you added the Dothan? If it did, does that CPU work? Try the system without any ram, that should cause a beep error. Try removing as much hardware from the system before booting, HDD, FDD, CD, Mini PCI card & Ram. See if this works.
If this system has never worked, even before your upgrades, then it's possible the system is DOA and you need a replacement.

I don't know what the problem is, but you are correct about ASUS being wrong with the cpu being too "new". My M6N came with a 1.5GHz Dothan and the bios installed on it was dated March 2004.

    Rotten luck!

With no error beeps or any indication of post'ing, it does sound like CPU to me... that or some kind of power problem. Fingers crossed that I don't have any such problems - my specs are exactly the same as yours, only I'm getting the Kingston DDR333 512 module.

What beep code? I've started my M6Ne without any RAM installed, got nothing. The power light comes on, that's about it.

    old: Sony PCG-GR300P 1.13GHz PIII-M, 512MB
    new: Asus M6Ne 2.00GHz P-M, 2GB

Well, the notebooks I used to repair (Toshiba, IBM, Compaq/HP), they would beep if there was no ram installed in the system during power-on. That's why I suggested it, but it doesn't look like Asus puts those codes into their BIOS. IBM's will actually give an alpha-numeric code when it detects a problem, it can then be referenced back to exactly what's causing it.

i'm glad ur issue is fixed... so my hypothesis about the ram turned
out to be correct... ya the notebook is picky about the memory types
and i guess ddr400 is too much especially since the actual cpu only
runs on a 100mhz bus... so pc2100 and 2700 should be fine... btw
make sure u install xp with sp2... it works WONDERS!

well spnorth i agree with u despite my laptop not being built by me
so i didn't hafta go thru that much trouble... but at the same i think
it is just asus' fault for the lack of support... as posted in earlier
in a lack of drivers thread... i am quite upset with the lack of
updates that asus should deliver... especially when one invest atleast
a good grand and a half for a laptop... i'm glad to hear that it was
just the memory that was ur bottleneck... but the good part of all
it all is and in my case as well... u learned valuable information
about notebook computers... cuz they are so much different compared
to desktop systems... and more importantly when u get ur notebook
setup the way u want it to its a very satisfying accomplishment...
and mind us all these notebooks are customized... its done to our
liking... not to those like ACER, AVERATEC, TOSHIBA, HP, and etc...
its a true notebook that u specify exactly what u want... enjoy brother
