Some time ago I purchased the following multimedia pc

    Asus M70Vm C-1

It works ok except the pc locks up whenm h ever I try to watch a blue ray or stream HD netflix - I can work for hours without issue but not watch movies on this supposed multimedia laptop. I have the 1900 x 1200 display.

Worse yet I sent it in to Asus to have something fixed and they removed the bluetooth capabilities from the the laptop and when I discovered this the warranty was over and they refused to address the issue.

Was excited when I first bought this now after a few years disappointed.

Anyone have ideas why it locks up - I tried updating drivers some time ago but that didn't seem to help

If it's not bad cooling, or actual physical faults with the ports, and so on - I'd bet good money that it's windows updates along with old drivers that's causing the hangs.

Thanks Nipsen - also Gentech PC where I bought this also suggested that dust in the laptop will cause these types of issues. I will remove the cover and blow out the dust and see what happens. He also thought the Asus folks did not install the blue tooth drivers when they fixed it but I don't even recall seeing a blue tooth device in the device manager.

Another option I am considering is an SDD drive (boot up time is extremely slow too) and maybe an upgrade to Windows 8 from Vista - maybe if as you say its old drivers this may make a difference.

Thanks for the feedback, I will post if any of these options work or not so others may have the benefit - although by now people have just gotten new laptops. :)

    Best,

    Ed

I seem to have cleared up the Netflix freeze problem - at least I was able to watch a full hour when before it would lock up in 5-15 minutes. We';; see. What I did was in a effort to see if I had any suspect drivers based on a post Asus Support - I installed Driver Sweeper - it installed two other programs with it - one of which was TuneUp Utilities 2014 ( this appears to be made by AVG but was downloaded from a german site). I ran the TuneUp which included cleaning registries and updating some drivers automatically. Having run the Norton Version of this I didn't think much of it. I also deleted some unused programs. After this I thought I'd give it one more try and was able to actually watch netflix. I was having this same issue watching DVDs so I need to still try that was well. But I am encouraged and I am NOT so ready to blame Asus for this issue.

Followup: In retrospect I think the fix was more related to removing the bad codecs and removing unused programs from the main drive - regardless it was one of the following and my laptop seems stable for watching video - first time in several years

Ran Microsoft tool for removing bad codecs that are known to cause video freeezing.
Removed unused programs that resulted in freeing up a nearly full drive
Removed base cover of laptop and Inspected and cleaned dust (there was very little dust)
    Ran AVG tuneup tool

As such I decided to pick up SSD drive (black friday was 3 days ago) and upgrade the operating system to 8.1
