My M50Vn comes with a CPT1465 screen (Chunghwa Picture Tubes). Some M50Vm had this screen too.

From the CPT manufactuer website, it may be one of the 4 screens starting with CLAA154WP0..., but not sure how to derive those from CPT1465.

EDIT: Using Everest, it shows it as a CLAA154WP05A which is according to CPT website:
contrast 600:1, response time 10ms, brightness 200cd/m2, interface LVDS

Try to use or click on the "Compare" feature on our website and you should see a window like this http://www.excaliberpc.com/Products/ProductsCompare.aspx?id=588982. Which models are you looking at?

N50Vn 15.4" WXGA/WXGA+/WSXGA+ AI Light Sensor embedded * WXGA (LED panel). I don't believe models with WSXGA+ are using LED backlight panels, will check with ASUS again today. Thanks!

It seems like only the WXGA screen are LED lit for the ASUS N series. However, Gentech listed their N series with WXGA+ and WSXGA+ screen as LED lit. That's why I'm a little confused as well.

Does any of these laptops have a 1600*1000 res screen. From all the shops i've seen they only have the 1400*900 version.

Also what is a LED lit panel means?

    Thanks.

Do you mean a 1680x1050 screen? The M50VM-B2/B5, N50VN-C2S and
L50VN-C1 have the higher 1680x1050 resolution.

LED screens are thinner, consumes less battery and often brighter than LCD screens. It's usually more desirable over LCD.

I just don't get how the M50Vn-AK014G is
    C2D T9400 2.53GHZ, 500GB, 2x2GB DDR2, 15.4WSXGA, NV G9650M GT/1G, BLU-RAY COMBO, BT,1.3M, VISTA ULTIMATE

    Whereas the is Asus L50VN-AK004G
    C2D T9400 2.53GHZ, 500GB, 2x2GB DDR2, 15.4WSXGA, NV G9650M GT/1G, BLURAY COMBO, BT, 1.3, VISTA ULTIMATE

They're like nearly exactly the same...except as far as i can see the L50 is being sold for about 300 dollars more than the m50...weird.

The M series are slowly being replaced by the newer N series. The L50 has the added leather and an extra USB port compared to the N50 hence the higher price (about $90)

In the N-series, ONLY WXGA screens are LED lit. This is info given to me from Gentech.

FYI - didn't expect much from Altec Lansing, but even WORSE than expected. Have noticed that even after having this for only a week, when I accidentally pulled out my headphones during skype (not even anything noisy!) that the speakers actually started to CRACKLE. ew. Thats not an exaggeration, they were REALLY BAD.

Luckily, have had no problem with the sound when I plug in my stereo, yay - despite having HEAPS of problems with it in the M51Va (which I quickly replaced with this!!!), even though I agree with whoever said the location is not ideal.

Obviously, I'm not very computer literate, but I thought I'd let you guys know some of the pro's and con's from the perspective of a regular user.

Its not as shiny and plasticy as it appears in some of the photos someone posted earlier - I can take a shot when I get home later, I think those pics reflected too much (did you use a flash?) and made it look bad - its actually f***ing sexy!

I have adopted the little cleaning wipe for the screen for my glasses - its really good! Normal glasses cleaners smear, this thing is awesome - I should buy this fabric in bulk!

The battery life is great - I only realised how good it was when I accidentally knocked out the power cable with my foot and was too lazy to plug it back in...

I didn't notice excessive heat and its super quiet - I ran this thing all weekend and it was fine.

Not much of a gamer but I'll 3DMark over the weekend and see how I go. Let me know if anyone has any questions - if you explain what the hell you're talking about I'll be happy to work out what the answer is :p

I haven't noticed any ions being emitted..... but I'm happy it seems... so either I'm just excited about having a new toy, or it really IS increasing blood flow to the brain, haha.

(P.S. these things are marketing GOLD. This is a chicks notebook, no doubt, I'm in love with it)

NOTE: whoever said JB were selling it for 2600, I convinced one of the JB guys in SYD to give it to me for 2500.

For best battery life, I suggest you do some mild battery cycles (say down to 20% and then recharge) at least once every month or so.

Thanks! I didn't know that, with my last laptop I pretty much had it plugged in 90% of the time. I don't like to use it during transit. But I'll make a note to just unplug it every now and then. :)

To compare the M50VN to the N50VN... the speakers on the M50 actually sound pretty good. The battery life for some light web browsing I get up to 2.5 hours. The 3DMark06 score I got on default settings with default gfx drivers - I think default res it said was a low 1280x720 - was 4895. This was a bit lower but if you look at notebookcheck.net... about 4800-4900 is what may be expected from an ASUS with 9650M GT 1GB DDR2. So it is similar I think, maybe slower in some ways, to a 9600M GT with GDDR3. GDDR3 on the 9650M GT may get you something like 5800 so a bit of a diff. So will be interesting to see what type of memory the N50VN has. Regarding heat, the M50VN runs really cool compared with other computers, I have only seen the GPU at max 61C when running a stress test... and 3dmark06 didn't make it hit that high. The notebook is fairly quiet, although the fan is always on it is at an ever so quiet speed, don't know if there is an option to turn it off completely.

Regarding price, Sydney is almost always cheaper than Melbourne for computers. I had to order mine online Melb stores were so expensive.

Does anyone know if the Blu-Ray drives on the L, M and N series can burn Dual Layer DVD's?

So the Australian version of the m50vn (AK014G/AK013G), definitely has a tv tuner/antenna?

Only the AS013G has been confirmed in this thread (despite Asus telling me it does not). I would expect the more expensive AK model should, but you never know.

Yes, DVD Super Multi Drive will burn dual layer DVDs.

Only the WXGA screens are using the LED panels.

What about the Blu-Ray drive? Or are they the same? Your site lists both, with models having one or the other.
