    Good day.

I am having issues helping my daughter w/ her backlit keyboard. During boot and up to the point of windows first splash, the keyboard will light up. In normal use, neither the Fn f3 or f4 work.

Now, mind you, my daughter is a chemist and seems to have lost her basic observation skills ;) I have worked on computer off and on over the last year or so and they have always worked. She visited yesterday and asked me to "fix my keyboard lights". I asked her when they stoped working and she relied "maybe in the last couple days to months".... :0

I'm not sure what driver is used for this process and at this point don't remember how they are installed, as there use to be a check drivers and install.

All in all, the driver page shows no updates for ... um... 2-3 years, so it can't be a update conflict. To be on the safe side, I have uninstalled and re-installed the ATK package.

    Assistance would be gratfully appreciated

She is running Win 8 64

THE Tony Stark?? Stumped by a Q400A? :p

Did you also reinstall the keyboard device filter? It hasn't been updated, so as you said, it's unlikely a software update conflict. Still, there isn't much else responsible for keyboard and keyboard LED functionality.

Thanks mate, actually I gave it to Jarvis to be fixed IronMan2.gif

I ended up downloading the ONLY KB drivers several times. It finlay installed and they once again work....

Now I have bigger hulks to toss, as I installed 8.1 and now the damn thing boots into a black screen w/ pointer.

    That Jarvis!

Hmm, strange. A firmware update might resolve it if the problem turns up again, though flashing the EC firmware is not to be taken as lightly as updating drivers.

Marvel pun intended? ;) How did you go about installing 8.1?

Through the Microsoft upgrade tool in the store.

Here is what has been happening so far~

I have read several (million jk ) issues that seem to be of the same ilk. After windows 8.1 update (via windows store free upgrade) the system will go through its initializing sequence then go to a black screen w/ pointer.

I have this issue both in windows and safe mode. I have attempted to follow these steps and while I can try thses, non offer the ability to install anew driver. Here it stays.

I have read this is normally caused by a graphics driver issue. In several cases the thread was closed, as the user was able to resolve the issue... but left no conclusion. (Mind you, I did not see this here)

I read through this post , which gave me a newer driver then the ASUS site shows for my laptop, but overall it does not help with my issue.

    Laptop is ASUS Q400a
    Asus Q400A-BHI7N03 Specifications:

    Display: 14″ LED-backlit TFT-LCD HD widescreen display (1366 x 768 resolution) Processor: 3rd Gen Intel Core i7-3632QM CPU, 6MB L3 cache, 2.2GHz processor speed, max. TurboBoost frequency 3.2GHz

Graphics: Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics

    Memory: 8GB DDR3 1,600MHz RAM

    Storage: 500GB SSD

    Optical drive: DVD burner

    Webcam: 1.0MP webcam

    Gigabit Ethernet, no Bluetooth

Input: Backlit chiclet-style keyboard with numeric-pad, multitouch touchpad

Ports and Slots: 2 x USB 3.0 ports, 1 x USB 2.0 port, 1 x HDMI, media card reader Battery:

It would appear (now), during step 8 here, that the ASUS driver (
VGA_Intel_Win81_64_VER101810330802 ) should be updated for 8.1. This seems to have been the missed step. This doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere. This is an observation is from self deduction.

So, How in Gods name, do I push/install the correct driver in order to get past the black screen?
