    Hi there,
I'm curious about the SPDIF in the Asus N46V. Does this mean that it can output 5.1 surround stereo?

It seems strange to me that the SPDIF out is the same plug as the microphone. Surely it would make sense to pair it with the 'headphones'.
    Unless I'm missing something.

Look forward to any replies, thanks for your time.

Mm. It's not using the stereo analog output, but some other contact points or pin sets. To get a digital signal. It's just put in the same connector. You can use an adapter or a connector that fits with a digital spdif in on a tv or a stereo.

    Thanks for your reply.

I'm curious because on p19 of the manual it clearly states the headphones jack is a combination S/PDIF jack. I've attached a screenshot of the manual page.

So, my question is, if I used an S/PDIF into a 5.1 compliant system, like the logitech z506, would glorious 5.1 sound come pouring forth?

Grateful if anybody can shed light on this matter.

Actually, I can confirm that I get a digital signal through the headphone out jack. I dug up an old digital cable that I've had for years, and you can see the red light coming through!

Now, does that mean that I can just plug it into a 5.1 system (logitech z506) and get 5.1 sound?

I'm feeling optimistic, but can anyone confirm?
