    Hi guys!

This is my first post here so forgive me that I'm asking questions without having made any contributions here before

Anyway, I purchased an Asus N46VB last week (an upgrade from my Dell Inspiron 1564). This is the hardware config I got:

    Intel® Core™ i5 3230M
    6GB DDR3 RAM
    750GB 5400 RPM HDD
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 740M 2GB

It came on Windows 8, but I installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on it. The problems (or things that bother me which may not be problems at all) existed with Windows 8 as well. The thing is that HDD is always loading sth (100%) especially when I just turn the laptop on. One other thing is that after it boots into Windows CPU load is high in the beginning as well (40-50%). Well after everything settles down, even idle CPU load is about 10% most of the time. When I open WMP to play some music it goes up to 30-40% with so many lags in the operation of the programs. The core temperatures are withing 50-60 from what I've checked with Core Temp. The other problem lies with the HDD. When I'm copying sth to my laptop from an external HDD/flash memory, everything slows down. Programs start with so much delay as well when nothing is being done/copied whatever. I have no problem playing/opening files from other sources, but from HDD it is very slow. To summarize what I just said is that I have this laptop which is hot and slow at times (usually, let's say). Maybe it is sth normal with the Asus N Series, but my 3 year-old Dell boots much faster and also feels snappier with a Core i3 and 4GB of RAM relying on no VGA other than its Intel HD Graphics. I would really appreciate your insights into what I'm experiencing right now.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hey Morteza91,

Have you opened your task manager to ascertain what may be causing the CPU usage to spike? And since you're comparing the Asus to your Dell: does the Dell also use a 5400 RPM drive? Those low RPM drives are egregiously slow. You may want to check the drive with a disk utility as well, though, such as HDTune or HDSentinel.

    I hope that helps. :)

Thanks! Actually, I checked the drive with HDTune and it was 100% healthy :D I guess it is the typical thing with this drive itself. That Dell also uses a low RPM drive. It has broken down and I cannot to a direct comparison at the moment,
By the way, the laptop seems to be running much more smoothly these days (especially after I started this thread) !!! I guess I just wasted your time with my thread :( Maybe it was just some teething problems that now are gone.

I really appreciate your answer. Thanks a bunch!

Just like when we bring a car to a mechanic! But I'm glad the computer seems better.

Hi guys! It's me again with this "Curious Case of Asus N46VB"

I've discovered some other weird things with my laptop. Whenever I attach a USB Flash memory, The ODD blinks and makes a sound as though a disk has been inserted. Without this thing happening the USB Flash is not recognized. This thing also happens whenever I open a file or something to watch/play and also when you turn on the laptop and it boots to Windows for the first time. Copying speed is also very low and about 30 MB/S (from a USB 3.0 Flash attached via a USB 3.0 port) while my sister's Lenovo with the same Flash memory and also a USB 3.0 port the speed is at least 60 MB/S !!! That thing boots a lot faster as well with a 500GB HDD with the same speed as mine. Is it typical with Asus laptops or I have been given a faulty device? My laptop is still under warranty. Should I send it there to be checked?
