So guys, I just came across the following: link

I'm sure the K52 N53 N61 all have different looking keyboard but i'm hoping that it will still fit the N53.

Anyone up for a challenge? I just bought it but probably won't do it until ASUS fixes my laptop 100%

Just like the 3820TG keyboard mod we need to solder the ribbon cable somewhere right?

Maybe we can sacrifice the Wifi on/off switch for the backlight?

Hey, Im contemplating buying a back lit keyboard as well except from here. http://www.amazon.com/keyboard-0KN0...01-04GNV33KUS04-3/dp/B004L94JK8/ref=pd_cp_e_3

One of the stores even ships from US. Once you get your keyboard check and see if there two ribbons or just one (Im afraid they are combined) and if it actualy fits the laptop. If it does I will order it and see what kind of minimal intrussion mod I can come up to power it, ideal I would like to piggy back it off a USB plug with out soldering anything (since I still have 8 month of warranty left...once I figure it out I would post a guide.

I hear that Turbogear did a similiar modification to a n71jq model from asus. I personally have an n71jq looking forward to implementing this modification but without soldering as well. Perhaps looking through Turbogear's implementation, you can probably do the same with the N53 model for I heard the N series notebooks are quite similar in frame.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/507561-n71jq-backlight-keyboard-implementation.html

I was looking forward to utilizing an on and of switch rather than use of a touch sensor, perhaps utilizing a mini pcie card sata / usb card in the boards available mini pcie slot to draw power. But this is all in theory, perhaps anyone who has expierence with modification might be able to consider this for it does not require soldering the main MB. I'd like to keep my laptop for a long time.

I checked by looking through images seems like they keyboard I posted will work as further search of the images of 9J.N2J82.Q01 is exactly same as 9J.N2J82.M01 as well as 9J.N2J82.P01. Seems the last letter of the code is designated for different series or something. Considering its 20$ I think I will order it as I want a chick-let style keyboard anyway and if its back lit that means the letters will not erase with time even if I don't end up hooking it up. As well I think there is a way to hook this up with out soldering if you go to http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/toyjzx100/82708/IMG_0695.jpg
(from N53JF disassembly guide) you can see that the right side USB's are connected via ribbon, meaning there is 5volt power going down there...which is what we need and possibly can exploit without use of solder to power the keyboard and thus not void warranty..unless u up the ribbon that is o_O

Yes can be done without soldering the main motherboard. Use the wifi switch. You need to bridge two of the 3 pole switch connections to enable the wireless to be on permanently. You can still turn the wireless on and off by F2 or by Wireless console 3. The 3rd pole of the switch needs to be unsoldered and attached to the Ground wire of the backlit keyboard. The positive wire needs to be soldered (piggy backed) to the back of 5volt usb connection. Works a dream. I used a Asus G73 backlit keyboard off of Ebay.

YES! I didn't think anyone was really interested in this mod. I have an n53sn laptop. I tried buying a keyboard and struck out. It was the G73 backlit keyboard with part # 9J.N2J82.Q01. When the keyboard is plugged in, all the key maps are different. For instance, "enter" is "." and I couldn't figure out how to fix that since it also affects the bios. If anyone ends up getting this keyboard, please post the part # that worked.

Mine seems to be behaving differently... `enter` is different in mine. So this should be a localization problem. How can we make it normal, I`m going nuts here.

Hey all, I noticed you said you had issues with the keymap?

I want to tell you that this is NOT an issue!

You can fix this issue using a free program called autohotkey.

You will need to manually figure out where each button goes, but it is easy one you know how.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR REMAPPING KEYS WITH AUTOHOTKEY

    • Download the free program autohotkey
    • Create a text file on your desktop.
    • Rename the text file to keyboard.ahk
    • Open the file in Notepad++ or just Notepad should also be able to open it.
    • Type in code to replace your keys like this: keytochange::keyyouwant
    • EXAMPLE: You mentioned that your "Enter" key is actually typing a period ".". What you need to do is change the keymap to an "Enter". here is the code to do that:
    • HTML:
      .::Enter
    • Note that this will not change the period "." key. This will only make the Enter physical key type out "Enter"
    • Now let's say when you type "K" you actually get "L". Here is how to fix that. Type out the following:
    • HTML:
      L::K
    • Now use your intuition and build a file that remaps all your keys to the correct key.
    • ------------------------------
    • Okay, now you have remapped all your keys, now you need the program to start with Windows, because you don't want to have to open up the program every time you log off or restart your computer. Here is how to do that:
      1. Click the Start button , click All Programs, right-click the Startup folder, and then click Open.
      2. Open the location that contains the keyboard.ahk file you just created.
      3. Drag the file into the Startup folder.
    • Now it will seamlessly start with Windows! Congratulations, you have remapped your keyboard the simplest and best way.

Send me a message if you need any help.

Some keys won't give any letters at all... So I'm having difficulties remapping them.

I ordered another one btw :)

Thanks for the concern extremelaptop, but as Laths said, some keys don't give any strokes registers (i was using keyboard test program to see which keys are pressed). So it really is an issue, so an K50 keyboard is NOT compatible with N53.

But i was thinking.. is there a way to switch the chips inside the keyboards...?

These are the details for the keyboard which is NOT working with N53 but it states it's working with K50AB K50IJ P50 K50AD K50AF:
    Protek P/N: 0KN0-E03us23
    ASUS P/N: 04GNV33KUS04-3
    DFE P/N: 9J.N2J82.Q01
    Serial Number S/N: 1024D002159 or 10240002159
    REV A
    Model: NSK-UGQ01

    Code: 0KN0-E03US231024D002159 or 04GNV33KUS04-310240002159.

I had the same problem with a backlit keyboard on my N53, I had bought the K50 series and some of the keys did not register as button presses, while others were mapped to the wrong key. I ended up returning it and got a refund. Then I purchased one for the Asus G-Series laptops, but it never ended up coming and I just got the money refunded on my Paypal.

Does anyone know the exact model number that we need for the N53 because I don't want to have to RMA another one.

Well, I've got another one from a local spare part shop which is incredibly impossible to find here in Turkey. I was surprised to see a "backlit keyboard" within these borders. Anyway, It was titled "N53 series backlit keyboard", they probably know there are no backlit keyboard option for this model but they wrote it like that.

And It's working... I just need to find a way to mod it to make the lights work.
