Just bought this computer. Anyone have a "need to know" introduction for me before I run into problems?
Thanks, otto.

Get rid of all the bloatware and programs you don't want or will never use!
Otherwise you'll pay for this via diminishing processing speeds and long startup times in the long run!.
Install CC cleaner to help with this and run it at least once a week!
This goes for everyone else that has bought a new computer! -

do nothing is my advice. there is barely any bloatware other then trend micro. it is when you start doing things that most new users run into problems. if it is not broke then dont fix it.

On the laptop in my sig, there were over 20 Programs installed that were essentially useless to me. Most of them slow your computer down and use up unnecessary disk space.
Nowadays most of the PC’s in the marketplace are very generic. One of the few ways for manufactures to distinguish themselves from the competition is by adding these ‘’ helpful’’ programs.
The key to getting the most out of your PC is to regularly maintain it. You maintain your car by getting it serviced, feeding it petrol and changing it fluids- so why wouldn’t you do the same for your PC? Unfortunately most consumers are not savvy enough to do this or even realize this.
And so they wonder why there PC’s slow down after a year’s use.
Of course if you’re not very technically minded then you might do more harm than good, in which case get someone that is to do it!
Happy Computing! -
I ordered this machine from Newegg. My bank card allocated the funds to pay for it and Newegg said that because my delivery address was different than the one associated on the card, it was on "hold".
I called my bank and established my new address on the card and re-ordered with the new info.
Newegg said that now I didn't have enough money in my account, it was rejected. I called tech. order support and was informed that returns of voided orders would take three to five business days.
So here I am waiting out the time to order again.
I was going to go through Amazon, where I have never had any problems, but they had run out of stock and now through another Amazon partner were offering the same thousand dollar machine for $1300.
Will order as soon as Newegg gives me back my purchase price.
I think it's a bunch of crap and I'm thinking about looking elsewhere.
What sayest you? -
It's in stock on Amazon now

If you have enough money in your credit card, you can order it from Amazon. You don't have to wait for your order to be cancelled from Newegg.
Newegg like Amazon is one of the very professional company.
Yes, it does have NVIDIA Optimus Technology:
Amazon.com Product Description
"Boasting powerful NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M graphics with NVIDIA Optimus Technology"
Amazon.com: ASUS N53SV-XV1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Silver Aluminum): Computer & Accessories
You know your credit limit and when you placed your purchase order with Newegg, you shouldn't have spent any more money somewhere else, if you didn't have enough in your credit card.
According to you, your credit card didn't have enough funds for them to make the charge for the purchase at Newegg, as in the meantime you spend the money somewhere else. -
All the N-Series models come with Intel Integrated GFX and Nvidia Optimus GFX Cards.
The laptop automatically switches between the two.
You can adjust the settings in the Nvidia control panel.
I have set mine so that I use Nvidia GFX Card for playing games and Intel integrated GFX for everything else.
You can tell which GFX card your N-Series is using as an indicator light above the keyboard changes to White for Nvidia GFX and to Blue for Intel Integrated GFX -
The address issue with Newegg put the order on hold.
I cancelled the first order and corrected address issue with my bank.
I re-ordered same exact item and it was told that my account no longer had sufficient funds because Newegg had not re-credited the first order and was told it would be three to five business days before my bank would release the lien put on my account by Newegg.
I e-mailed customer support yesterday and got a reply today.
I checked my balance and found the monies were put back into the account.
Newegg is a very solid and reputable company. It was my bank that was holding up the re-credit. -
Reinstall Windows via this guide, then put in the driver disk and reinstall the drivers and a few of the programs off of that (there's a bloatware guide for Asuses on these forums that tell you which ones are worth keeping).
As a side note, does anyone know how the Optimus drivers work? Can I just get the latest drivers off of the nVidia website and install them? -

For Optimus to work properly, use the Nvidia drivers from the ASUS site. Also, you need to have Power4Gear Hybrid installed from ASUS site.
P4G Hybrid Latest:
ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download P4GHybrid
You should have 2 ON switches. The ON switch on the right side turns the laptop ON/OFF. The ON switch on left side has two functions, when the laptop is OFF, this switch turns the laptop ON into Express Gate Could (Linux) Operating System, but while in Windows it turns the Optimus ON/OFF through P4G Hybrid.
BTW, I will not clean install. After sometime, I will remove some of the bloatware.
Right now I will only un-install:
1. The Anitvirus program and install my own Antivirus program.
2. ASUS update utility as it tends to mess up things. -
@King of Rapture: Ah I was hoping for a work around. And my left power button simply cycles through the P4G battery modes (High Performance, Entertainment, Quiet Office, Battery Saving), similar to holding down Fn + the spacebar. The symbol on mine is also the same as on my spacebar, so this didn't really surprise me, are you sure it switches the optimus on yours?
And why not? A clean install is much more effective than selectively removing the bloatware, and after installing the drivers and necessary programs off of the drivers disk, there aren't any problems that you would run into if you chose to uninstall some of the programs such as the extra games. -
I wonder, if one plans to clean install Windows on this, is there advantage to -not- boot up the already installed Windows after you unbox the machine? Instead, use the serial from bottom of laptop as clean install's serial, so the original Windows on the machine is untouched? Or there is no difference whatever you do? XD
-
Since the C partition is going to be formatted anyway, it shouldn't make a difference whether or not you use the preloaded software before reinstalling Windows.

how's the screen quality on this model (the 1080p one)? thanks

When up grading the ram on this machine, does it matter where I put it?
I plan to add 2X4 gig Corsairs. With the original 2x2 gig-do they go into slots 1 and 2 or 3 and 4?
