I put in my own hdd on the N550 and I'm stuck with 2 driverless devices in device manager:
SM Bus Controller
Unknown device
The SM Bus Controller is most likely the Intel chipset drivers. I tried both the Asus website version as well as the latest from Intel and both cause BSOD loops right after logging into W8. I have to recover using System Restore. The SM Bus Controller gets labelled right before the reboot from the Intel installer so the drivers are most likely correct; just don't know what's causing the reboots.
Anyone run into the same issue? I updated the bios to the latest version 205 but it didn't help.

I have yet to actually clean install Windows 8, but since everything has been working great, I decided against it.
Assuming you have not overwritten the original HDD since you say that you put in your own HDD:
You could...
1) Try another clean install using their provided factory restore copy. There should be a function that allows saving the recovery partition onto a 16GB flash drive for use in restoring (and in this case writing a new) factory restore copy with everything preloaded. Not sure how to exactly use it, nor if it works with a different HDD.
2) Try another clean install & use their eSupport driver disk and attempt to install all necessary drivers/programs:
You could put the original hard drive back in and copy over the eSupport folder (at the root of the C drive) to your own external HDD which installs any drivers or software that is originally installed on the laptop.
Then clean install on your new HDD, copy that eSupport folder into your new HDD, and run the AsInsWiz executable in the eDriver folder. Then choose the programs/drivers that you want installed. -
Thanks, I ordered w/o a hdd at all and put in my own. The reseller did not include the drivers disk so I will request it.
Good idea for you to stick with the stock install; the Asus apps aren't that bad! -
Seems to work now by updating the driver manually instead of using the setup exe.
The unknown device turned out to be Asus Wireless Radio Control.
On the Intel site, the device detector does not recognize my AC 7260 wifi card, anyone else run into that?
Getting WiDi to install was a pain as well but somehow it ended up working, seemingly, no WiDi receivers yet.
