I didn't want to practice thread necromancy and have read the "read before posting" threads. This problem has been documented to happen in other Asus models, but not this one.

Well, I have it on my brand new N550JK. Whenever I'm typing somewhat fast, the keyboard will miss a keystroke every now and then. I have checked and doublechecked, this is not me pushing the keys wrong. It's the keyboard failing.

ONLY FIX IS TO DISABLE THE TOUCHPAD IN BIOS.

I have tried deinstalling keyboard and touchpad drivers to let Windows take over to no avail. It seemed like deinstalling the keyboard filter driver thing did somewhat improve the situation, but ultimately it did not, I'm having this consistently. I'm missing a keystroke every 60-80. This doesn't happen with a usb keyboard.

I'm very disappointed with this. Year 2014 and a brand new laptop misses keystrokes, it's surreal. The laptop is otherwise great. But this is very very annoying.

I guesss I'll have to contact Asus support in Spain, but I know this will be a major PITA and doesn't guarantee it will be fixed since it's such a hard to pinpoint problem (plus I don't know if support in Spain report directly to the manufacturer or simply test and change/return the hardware). No other way though.

So, I'm posting this here hoping that anyone at Asus USA/International notices the issue as it happened in other threads. And also to let potential buyers/googlers know about this. Right now I wouldn't recommend getting one since this problem is already known in other asus models. This can only be fixed with a BIOS update, and it seems that even that didn't work for some owners of models like the G73h. This and other small caveats will make me reconsider buying Asus products in the future.

    Any updates?

The N550JK is my current choice for a new laptop, but an inherently flawed keyboard would be a real breaker for my work needs.

This has happened on other models where the fix was the same. It was reported as a driver conflict (an odd one at that). Let us know what Asus support says! Hopefully it's not a model wide defect.

Thanks! It sounded like that might be the problem. I read that there was some success after uninstalling or reinstalling the Asus Keyboard Filter, so if it's a soft issue I'm not going to be overly concerned.

My keyboard still misses keystrokes. I went back to Windows 7 from 8 and the issue persists. The Asus keyboard filter utility doesn't solve it. I tried installing and uninstalling it multiple times.

My current fix is just having it disabled in the BIOS as stated. I'm using a usb mouse instead.

After several complete nonsense e-mail exchanges with Asus support, they told me to send the laptop to them, and that it would take around 2 weeks to get it back. Since I rely on it for work, not to mention I now have an SSD running on Windows 7, an HDD in place of the ODD, upgraded RAM and a replaced wlan module... I really can't be bothered to put everything back in place, be without it for a couple of weeks and then open it up again and put the new components back there.

So, yeah. I don't think too much about it so I don't get mad. It sucks that I paid 1200€ for a defective unit, but I can't be bothered now to go through a repair process. Plus, risk getting it back worse than it went.

What boggles my mind is that Asus doesn't recognize this as a problem. It is a known problem in other models. It really cannot be that I'm the only one with it!

I still might send it sometime before the warranty expires and I'm not swamped with work though. The left ctrl key is also a bit depressed in its lower left corner, hope it doesn't break after a couple years use. Overall, not too satisfied with the laptop's build quality. Also surprised it's so hard to get a hold of Asus parts, that and they're so expensive!

Well, According to me, It's mainly ASUS I/O Handling bug.
TouchPad It self never remains OFF even when you turn it OFF using software end.
(Wanna try a live example? Turn off your display while Laptop is on by pressing 'FN' + 'F7'. Then move your finger on touchpad and it will turn screen ON. Even when TouchPad was supposed to be OFF).
Turning it off from BIOS isn't really a solution! So the Let all write an email to ASUS and let them know of this bug so that they release an BIOS update ASAP!.
    It's really a serious bug.

And also this laptop's touchpad recognizes more than 3 fingers at a time!
After knowing that I was simply astonished to see ASUS not making any use of it.
Such a capable touchpad and yet soo underwhelmed by limited number of available gestures.

Well, after using this for a month and half, I can say the keyboard is a mushy piece of crap. I don't know if it even is a driver/filter issue. I think the keyboard is at fault.

My keystrokes are dropping like flies unless I slow down my typing and hammer the keys.

    Keyboard isn't at fault!
Like I said above, TouchPad is always ON even when you turn it OFF using SOFTWARE(S). Which make keys to be missed when you have contact with touchpad while typing.
Don't believe me? put a thick cloth on whole touchpad and type as fast as you can, you will never see missing keystroke.
Only way out is either turn touchpad off in BIOS or ANYONE prepare a email template and everyone send it to ASUS support requesting quickest BIOS update fix.
ASUS are very good in listening user complaints.
Also I think Speakers are also underwhelmed by drivers. Right side always seams to be muffled over left side.

It's still mushy and cramped. :) I'm going to have to find little silicone stickers to mark my cursor, delete, and other landmark keys. Touch typing on this is annoying outside of QWERTY characters.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I'll try disabling it in BIOS and compare.

yes, numpad is awfully cramped which even makes moving 1 finger at a time too difficult task.
They easily could make it bigger.
And infect keyboard is the point of this whole laptop which made it really look like ugly.
I wish they had little silver glossy rims around corners of keyboard and had a little digging textures too just like HP.

But still keyboard is of quality and far more superior than HP in terms of quality.
I think finishing on keys of 550jk is also made of metal because I can definitely feel the coolness when I move my hand across keys.

Apparently, this problem of missing keystrokes is not unique to the Asus N550JK. I have just purchased an Asus N56JN and have the exact same problem, I have owned this unit for just over three weeks. Unfortunately, the store where I bought it only allows a 14 day return period, so I cannot return it anymore. I contacted Asus customer support and they offered some suggestions involving making adjustments to the BIOS and reinstalling the keyboard drivers, both of which I have done with no results. They also suggested that if those fixes failed, I would have to send my laptop in for servicing. I have also tried typing with the touchpad enabled and disabled. There is no difference. There are still missed keystrokes, two or three in every sentence that I type. So, really, I do not think that anything any of you would do outside of having your unit repaired by Asus or by another competent repairer of laptops will solve the problem.

I am a lawyer. I create documents for a living. I decided to go with Asus because of its good reputation and because this particular model seemed to have everything that I required for business and pleasure.I also believed that I was buying a higher end unit. Now I will have to send my brand new machine in for servicing, and based on what others have stated on the internet, I am not confident that Asus will be able to fix the problem. What troubles me is that people have been reporting missing keystrokes on Asus laptops for more than two years. One would think that if the problem was so old and so widespread, the company would do its best to resolve the problem. Instead it appears to be ignoring these complaints. I am shocked that Asus would do so since, like every business, I am sure that they would like to increase their sales.

Anyhow, I have no choice. Will send it in. If it comes back repaired, Asus will at least have redeemed itself in my eyes and will report this to all of you. If the laptop comes back in the same shape, then I'll make sure I inform the entire internet of my problem and post widespread warnings to stay away from Asus.

I hope that Asus will prove that it does care about its customers and its reputation.
