I am considering a black friday deal on an n56-vj but am concerned about many negative posts at amazon and other sites that complain the trackpad is terrible. Many say they have switched to a mouse. Has the trackpad hardware and software issues been finally fixed? Is there setting to make it work?

Looks like a great unit...but reading about some DOA's and complaints about poor construction of the trackpad.

    Any thoughts?

I just bought a N56VZ-RH71 on Friday and I can tell you the trackpad is poorly constructed. My left mouse button is recessed into the case. I have to click towards the center of the left mouse button for it to register. I'm also having problems with the touchpad jumping all over the place erratically. I'm in the process of checking for driver updates now to see if it cures the problem but that's kind of difficult when you're clicking everything except what you intended to. Asus PS/2 Port Clickpad driver version is 1.0.0.148. Anyone know what is the latest update?

You don't have to physically click the mouse pad, you can just 'tap' it, as explained in the manual/quick start guide :)
I got a mouse, the Microsoft wireless mobile 4000, and disabled the trackpad as I keep touching it when im typing.
