I've clean installed win 8 and updated to win 8.1, in the device manager under display adapter i see 2 display adapters
    1. Intel HD Graphics 4000
    2. Nvidia Gforce GT 635M

Should i disable one of them? or are they linked together?

No, you shouldn't disable anything. You have two graphic cards in the device manager because almost all newer processors have integrated graphics. When you are using your laptop for normal daily use like office stuff and browsing the web, your laptop uses the integrated Intel graphics, since it's the more power efficient. But if you do something graphics intensive like 3D rendering, gaming OR hook up the laptop to a tv, then the Nvidia graphics kicks in.

This is done automatically, so you don't have to think about it. (switchable graphics, I believe Nvidia calls it Optimus technology)

I would install the latest intel drivers then the nvidia ones and then in future just update the nvidia ones.
