Hi I have Asus N56VM and 750 GB hardrive installed. I want to know ,

    1. Whether I can upgrade it to 500GB SSD. Will SSD fit into the housing?
    2. Is it possible to clone everything to new SSD seamlessly? I dont want to lose Windows or backup partitions and installed programs.

    Thanks

    1. 2.5" drives should fit, some drives are slimmer so double check your mounting system wont mind.
    2. You need to get specific HDD->SSD cloning software as data needs to be properly aligned on the SSD for proper performance, some SSDs ship with this.

    1. Yes you can upgrade to a 500GB SSD as long as it's no bigger that 2.5"
    2. Yes you can get a data transfer kit which will make the whole process simple and easy.

While it's generally advised you do a fresh install onto a SSD, imaging/cloning or data migration can be done. Just make sure you have the drive aligned as Meaker pointed out - otherwise, you will cause more hassle than you bargained for (and will probably need to do a fresh install at that point anyway).

Also, 2.5" is the industry standard for laptop/notebook hard drives, so any drive marketed as a "laptop/notebook" drive should conform to this form factor and therefore fit (but keep Meaker's advice in mind, just in case the drive is slimmer; then you will need a homebrew fix to make sure it doesn't get jostled once installed to avoid damaging the port/connector).

    Thanks.

Coz I've read topics about upgrading from hdd with pre-installed windows 8 to new ssd that it doesn't work coz there's no win dvd included. My 56dp is coming and im planning to have fresh install with win8 to a ssd but these horror stories are scary. :p Totally noob here. XD

If your machine ships with win8 it will have a code built into the bios so should activate automatically.

Haha, you're welcome! Yes it can seem a bit overwhelming and confusing, but as Meaker pointed out, many laptops that came shipped with Windows 8 have the product key built into the BIOS, so during fresh installation, the key is automatically referenced and installation doesn't prompt you for a key.

You will still need installation media though, whether you have the installer on a USB key or DVD.
