    Good to hear that you got it changed! It was you I had in mind when I wrote the post. You've been trying so hard to get this card changed, I'm just glad I could assist.

    The smaller screwdriver thing is counter intuitive. I just figured it was worth a try, because straighter and smaller was potentially less destructive than bigger and more crooked.

    First, make sure the card is totally seated (I don't actually think you could put the screw in if it wasn't, but it's worth mentioning)

    Other than that, I just went right to the source. Intel's site. My guess for your card would be this one, it's a version 14.3.1 driver they say is the latest, it's worth trying:
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...64-bit)*&DownloadType= Software Applications

    The reason I say I guess it's the latest, is that they have a 15.x version that says it's previously released... http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sea...oductProduct=Intel®+Centrino®+Advanced-N+6205

    The driver I use for the 6300 is 13.5.0.6 which is the latest for that card. I thought I read earlier in the thread that you had a 6300 to put in, no? If you do, that's the easiest way to go, we know it will work, and it looks to be a slightly more powerful card... based on a quick look at the specs.

    Hello, I regularly play GW2 on the machine. native 1080p, I can get steady 60 fps with medium/low settings, ~45 fps with medium, and ~33-45 on high. I'd say it runs very smoothly. Auto detect puts it at medium/low, but some tweaking and it still runs beautifully and at a great fps.

    EDIT: While playable on all high, it slows down during big fights and whatnot to a crawl. The game looks amazing at medium/high which runs very smoothly, no need to turn on all the gizmos and gadgets.

    Hmm ... doesn't seem to work with me. The device refuses to start; it's a 6205 though, not a 6300. I read a few other posts saying that uninstalling the previous Atheros drivers could help. Also, the Asus power console 3. Did you do that?

    I tried to uninstall the Atheros drivers (you might find them under Qualcomm as well), but after the intel card is in, it gets grumpy and gives possibly the stupidest error ever. (see attached)

    If you want to remove that driver, put the atheros back in first, unless you know of a way to force it. Or try in safe mode, but i doubt that will get around a poorly written uninstall routine. I got lazy and left it alone.

    I didn't uninstall the Power Console 3,... I don't have it installed though. Unless you mean the Wireless Console 3? That I still have installed.

    I did notice at first, the 6300 didn't see any wireless connections, I ran it through the troubleshooter, which enabled the card. Possibly the first time ever a troubleshooter helped. Does the card appear in the Network Connections window, or is it only in the Device Manager at this point?

    Hi!
    Sorry for my english

    Since I install a second hard drive caddy HDD on my asus n56vz, he does not restart or not closes completely. the screen is off but the power button light stays on. I have pressed to close completely.

    I saw on a forum that had to cut a pine sata connector for hp for work.. ??

    thank you

    Unfortunately I'm not having the same experience with XoticPC. I asked to have a unit free of defects, ordered a month ago, but they still shipped a unit with a blown/defective left speaker. They also made me pay the return shipping and insurance (UPS Ground: $60) to do an exchange so they can try again. I haven't been offered compensation for my time and money lost, and there's no ETA on when the new unit will ship (I was told that my new unit has priority).

    The sales rep, Josh, is communicative and patient, but Xotic PC as a company is letting me down so far. Could you please share more specifics on your situation? For example, the person at Xotic PC who has been the most helpful in getting your situation resolved?

    This is particularly important with respect to the N56VZ because Asus's quality control is lacking on this model. When buying from an online retailer, the exchange process is naturally slower and (in my case, at least) more frustrating.

    Regarding the Asus U500 VZ vs. the N56VZ, I noticed this early pre-production review post, for those of you who haven't seen it: Asus Zenbook U500 - an in-depth preview

    Some things of note:

    1. The processor is .2 slower (2.1 rather than 2.3).

    2. The GPU has GDDR5 RAM, rather than GDDR3.

    3. The U500 apparently does run pretty hot. Two hours of full load brings CPU cores to 95 degrees c.

    4. IPS FHD screen looks great.

    I think I'm going to stick with the N56VZ if I can get a unit free of defects, mainly because of the heating issue.

    For those of you considering this laptop, I recommend using the following defect checklist, which I've compiled from the two major threads on notebookreview.com and from other various sources. I recommend sending the list to your reseller when ordering, or going through it yourself right after you buy a new unit from the store.

    1. Asus logo or keyboard backlight fails to glow;

    2. Speakers or chassis buzz during music of video playback

    3. Tab, caps lock, shift, ctrl, fn, windows, space bar, or arrow keys stick or click exceptionally loudly;

    4. Track pad protrudes from frame, is warped or overly submerged, or makes loud “clacking” noise when tapped lightly (noise from purposeful clicking is normal);

    5. Palm rest or keys become warm to touch during light-use (like web surfing) indicating heat-leak or other cooling problem;

    6. Warped keyboard, feels noticeably curved;

    7. Subwoofer accessory causes speakers to make "popping" sounds randomly;

    8. Cooling fan makes “rattling” noise, even or especially at low speeds;

    9. CPU temps run above 30c during idle (n56vz should run at ~25c while idle);

    10. Video playback or graphics rendering freezes or sputters abnormally;

    11. Cursor movement and clicking is erratic (defective track pad sensor);

    12. Blu-ray drive starts to spin and stops randomly when it is not being used;

    13. Power adapter makes loud high frequency coil whine noise or beeps while charging;

    14. Badly misaligned ports (to point where practically unusable);

    15. Panel bezel around display is not fully glued and makes clacking noise when screen is gripped (to open and shut).

    Interesting, this is the only one we've experienced here. I never did figure out how to stop it,.. is there a fix that you've seen?

    I think if I recall, the replacement drive that I subbed in didn't do it as much, and it doesn't seem to happen now that the drive is in a USB enclosure...

    There's a chance too that it stopped when I did a fresh install of Win7Pro....

    I'd still like to know if there's a software fix though.

    Good list. But... :)

    1. That was Asus not specifying that some of the models didn't actually have a backlit logo. *shrug* No, don't know either..
    2. This can also be dependent on the variation in the current in some places in the world - not exclusive to the n56..
    -
    6. It is supposed to be curved. :p
    8. Since it's a magnetically suspended fan, you should expect it to rattle a bit until it has run for a few hours.
    10. That could be because of overly eager anti-virus apps, and/or weird windows services. Unless the graphics card can't be enabled, it's unlikely something is physically broken (this happens extremely rarely, by the way)..
    -
    12. That's just windows. If you open a program that wants to access your files or the "your computer" functions, it will poll the active and inactive drives. Same problem with external usb-drives, secondary disks that spin up even though they're not used, etc.

    --

    But not that people shouldn't send the laptop back if there's something wrong.

    #9 ... The CPU of the N56VZ should run at 25°C in idle? That sounds pretty unrealistic. Mine runs between 36-40°C when running idle and having the High Performance setting on. But I doubt that it would go under the 30°C mark even in the battery saving mode while doing nothing.

    Thank you Nipsen. I have a few thoughts in response.

    1. On the N56VZ- DS71, the logo should glow. It's so strange that Asus reacted to that defect by denying it.
    2. The left speaker on the unit that was sent to me was defective and buzzed, not due to current. Reseller in another part of the U.S. confirmed it was hardware. Others have reported the same or similar issue.
    -
    6. Someone on these forums posted a photo showing that the entire chasis is a curved or warped. You think it's intentional? Either way, a curve doesn't bother me, but it might bother some people.
    -
    8. I didn't know that about the fan suspension. The unit that was sent to me didn't rattle. Others have complained about it.
    -
    10. I think you're right. This is a software conflict that is most likely fixable without exchanging for a new unit.

    The unit I received ran all four cores at ~20-25c at idle. That said, the CPU had Diamond thermal compound applied. I assumed that only made a 5-10c difference, at max, but perhaps I'm uninformed about what a big difference that stuff makes.

    Perhaps I got a unit that was especially excellent at cooling. It's too bad the blown speaker buzz was so intolerable during movies and songs that I had to exchange it. I'm crossing my fingers the next unit cools well too!

    Good idea. I tried something like this when I ordered mine from MLN in Australia. Since they were upgrading the RAM anyway, I figured it would be no hassle, and potentially save everyone some time & expense in sending it back.

    This is the reply I got:

    My initial reaction was "Screw you" ... but they are currently the only legitimate channel to buy N56VZ in Australia so I kinda had to be diplomatic and hope if anything was glaringly obvious they wouldn't send it.

    Fortunately my machine came with no build defects. Had some issues with the RAM (they supplied wrong speed) which they did rectify - but only after I sent the RAM back to them at my cost.

    Through many emails exchanged before and after the sale, MLN were never outright hostile, but they certainly weren't friendly or helpful either.

    Does anyone else have such temperatures? Maybe you really got luck that you picked the right N56, but I doubt that they've used Diamond thermal compound for the CPU.

    What temperature you get while gaming or under heavy load? That might be also interessting.

    It would a dream to have such low temperatures. I have 55-60C while surfing (battery save mode). So I think, my temperatures are too high only while surfing?

    When I play Skyrim (FHD, medium settings, 4xAA, AF off) I get up to 76C for CPU and 74C for GPU. This again seems to be ok.

    A question: The air intake and exhaust are on the left upper side, correct? Would a cooling pad help to lower the temperatures?

    One more thing..

    I updated the BIOS to 211 yesterday and I think the fans run at higher speeds and so it is noisier. How are your experience with the 211 BIOS?

    I paid for diamond thermal compound. (The unit I received was customized by a re-seller.)

    Also, when I said idle, I did mean totally idle. The computer was sitting there doing nothing, after fully booting. (And with a clean install of Windows.)

    So you positive the stock wireless atheros card doesn't support high bandwidth wireless n connections? And you popped in the Intel 6300 agn dual band to have it immediately work at full speed?

    I'm not positive that the card doesn't support the higher speeds of N, what I am positive of is that my card, in my machine did not connect at higher than G speeds.

    In the specs, it's capable of N speeds (not dual band, but N capable), in practice, I didn't see any settings in the device properties with the 2 drivers I tried, that led me to believe that the card in my machine felt that "N" was one of its responsibilities.

    I've seen the intel card work at 200mb/s speeds, full speed I haven't seen yet, but with 2 of 3 antenna cables, we might not see it. The Intel card was literally a pop it in, download and install the driver and go.

    I received my N56VZ-DS71 a couple of weeks ago. I purchased from Xotic PC and had them remove the HDD and replace it with a 480GB Intel SSD and do a 'clean install'.

    Before I get into my mini-review, I have a question. The subwoofer plugs in and appears to be working, BUT, when I right click on the Realtek HD Audio Manager from the system tray, the 'Speaker Configuration' is set to Stero and is greyed out (can't be modified). Is this normal? I would have thought with the subwoofer plugged in I would be able to configure the speakers to either 2:1, 4:1, etc...

    Now my mini-review.

    Windows boots in about 10 seconds (from selection on GRUB screen to Windows Login prompt).
    Screen is excellent with very good viewing angles.
    Wireless is pretty good with the stock wireless card.
    Keyboard is very good.
    Ethernet jack is a pain, but it works fine once you get it in.
    Speakers are very good.
    The Blu-Ray/CD cover is not flush with the side of the laptop and doesn't look level (more of a gap on the right top then on the left top). It works, but I would like to fix this. Any advice on how I would go about this?

    Ubuntu 12.04 (I dual boot with about 120 GB allocated to Linux) boots in 5 seconds or less. Intalling 12.04 was a breeze but getting it to boot into it proved more difficult. When prompted for Windows Loader or Ubuntu 12.04, when I selected Ubuntu, the screen would simply go to the GRUB> prompt. I eventually got it working by by Googling my issue and running a boot repair program.

    Once that was fixed, Ubuntu 12.04 works fine. My only complaint is my battery life in Linux is not very good - I've heard that Ubuntu does not have very good power management and I can confirm (at least in my case) that is true.

    I find it mostly a pain to get out, but if you get something fairly pointy and push the flap down while you pull the cable out it's OK. If you don't do that, it seems the flap will eventually break.

    You can try removing it and realigning. It's a single screw on the bottom (it has a picture of a CD next to it. Then make sure the tray is out, and grab a solid bit with some pliers and give it a gentle tug. You might find just moving it and retightening the screw is all that is necesary though.

    Yes. The plate has a pin that's a little close to the one tab, but you can convince it, and it will sit flush. Just have gentle hands when you do it, and it will look fine.

    If you get POST, or the asus logo lights up, press esc to boot from the other devices on the laptop. The order is the first hdd (the first sata device on the controller), second sata device (your hdd bay?), and then the rest (like an usb stick) has to be selected from the menu manually.

    Btw, doubt it's the actual caddy that makes the computer not boot. If you have a connection of some sort, there really is no way to halt the other devices on the controller, like it used to be with the ide controllers. No way to somehow prevent the boot either, unless the thing... I don't know.. shorts out and blows up the sata connector or something.

    On mine, using the drivers from the Asus website, it automatically detects the subwoofer being plugged in and switches to 2.1 mode.

    Try this: Play some pop or hip hop music without the subwoofer. Plug in the sub as the music is playing. It should stop just for a moment and then continue with a filter split between the internal(mid end up) and external speakers (low end and low mid frequencies).

    It should be a noticeable change. You don't need to twiddle with the driver settings or software as it will instantly switch from stereo to 2.1 if the sub is plugged in.

    Just received my laptop now over a week and I love everything about this laptop except for the size. I've been playing Torchlight 2 for hours on SSD drive and it never get too warm for me to touch. The sound system is great. The 1080p screen is pefect comparing to my old Asus laptop and other laptop I've used in the past. I also like the feel of the keyboard. Definitely no regret.

    Hey Sproyd - thanks for the response. Which driver? The Realtek Audio Driver (Version V6.0.1.6680, which is the latest on the Asus website) or (Version V6.0.1.6622 )?

    Thanks again.

    There's nothing you can do about this and its not unique to the laptop - it has to do with the electrical current bleeding across into the analog audio signal. It will probably stop if you are on battery. It has to do with how clean your wall power is - you can spend big bucks to clean the signal if you really care about it.

    I used to have a desktop for music production and this drove me up the wall. I even replaced my PSU to an expensive silent one to no avail.

    This laptop is MADE for Torchlight II!! I got the demo off Steam and fell in love with how it looks and plays on the N56VZ-DS71 so I had to buy it. It is honestly incredible and runs at about 80-100 frames on high, looks great in 1080p and is just overall a good gaming experience - provided you have a gaming mouse of course.

    I agree with your other comments although I would say (a) the size is perfect for a laptop of this power. Any smaller and you would be sacrificing cooling on the 650m (b) the keyboard isn't that great. I'm not sure if its cos mine is now a couple months old but as a touch typist this keyboard could be a lot more responsive and doesn't have a patch on the mac keyboards.

    Good news, with the new nVidia 306.23 driver we see major improvements to Guild Wars 2 performance, according to my personal experience. In terms of temperatures, I don't see any difference: CPU maxes at 85C and GPU at 75C. In terms of FPS, I get an average of 80 FPS, fluctuating between 60 - 100 FPS depending on in-game activity. Prior to the driver release, I was getting 50-70 FPS, using the same settings. My settings have everything on high, but disabled shaders, shadows, reflections, v-sync, AA. Since my CPU is already at 85C, I decided not to OC since I was told it may add 10-15C to core temp. May attempt for curiosity's sake in the future ;).

    I loaded 6622 and still have the problem.

    I get the following pop-up message in the lower right part of the screen (above the system tray) when I plug in the sub
    "You just plugged a device into the audio jack"

    but the only Speaker Configuration displayed in the Realtek HD Audio Manager is Stero and it can't be modified.

    Also, I followed these instructions (from another thread) to fix the random popping noises coming from my left speaker.

    1. Right-click the Realtek icon in the system tray.
    2. Go to "Audio Devices"
    3. Click on the "Recording" tab
    4. Right-click and choose "show disabled devices" and "show disconnected devices"
    5. Right-click on "Stereo Mix" and set it as "Default Device"
    6. Right-click on "Stereo Mix" and go to "Properties"
    7. On the "Listen"-tab, make sure "Listen to this device" and "playback through Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)" is selected
    8. On the "Advanced tab" I changed the default format to 16bit, 192kHz and deselected everything under "exclusive mode". I think I got some message about a program or a process being interrupted, but I just accepted it (I have the same settings for the speakers on the playback-tab!).

    Do you think this could be preventing me from selecting 2:1 in the Speaker Configuration?

    @rickypicky

    I'm not sure what you want but I think you are being unrealistic. If you know anything about audio production you will know 2.1 is the same as 2 channel - just with a crossover filter to put low frequencies through the sub - its not actually a different audio channel.

    In this case the Asus does that so the fact you can't select 2.1 in the software shouldn't worry you as long as "low end" is coming out of your "subwoofer". If you really want good audio go buy a firewire or USB external sound card - the Asus "subwoofer" is just a bonus here.

    Also selecting 16bit 192KHz is doing nothing over what 44.1 or 48KHz would do. The sample rate wont' be any higher for any music or games but it may tax your hardware polling for a higher sample rate. Also, if you did have a 96KHz or higher sample rate file I will bet you won't be able to tell the difference without high-end (read $1000+) studio monitors and certainly not the cruddy (yes despite the B&O branding they are cruddy compared with proper monitors) laptop speakers.

    Sproyd-

    I was responding to one of your earlier posts which stated:

    "On mine, using the drivers from the Asus website, it automatically detects the subwoofer being plugged in and switches to 2.1 mode."

    I am trying to determine if there is anything wrong with my subwoofer. I've only had my laptop for about 3 weeks and can request a replacement subwoofer but only want to do so if there is something wrong the one I have. You stated yours switches automatically to 2:1 mode when you plug in your subwoofer. When I use the same driver that you use, mine does not - it stays in "Stereo" and can't be modified. I mentioned the settings that I made (to get rid of the "popping" noise in my left speaker) to see if you thought THAT might be the reason I can't choose 2:1 configuration.

    Does anyone else get a Kernel Power Event ID 41??? My laptop suddenly shuts down or BSOD during sleep I think. I'm not sure. I don't think it's a driver problem or a hardware one. Errors would manifest much earlier if it was a hardware problem. I wonder if my external devices - hard drive, and mouse - would have caused this.

    Can anyone else notice sound coming from the 7200 rpm hard drive at the bottom right of the laptop?

    Having built a dozen or so computers in my time, errors like this are often seemingly random, and can occur regardless of the fantastic job Microsoft has done with W7 interfacing with billions of different hardware combinations.

    If this is only occurring with external peripherals plugged in then you could deduce that would be the problem. I would say an external HDD would be more likely to cause this error than a mouse. I use a Razer mouse and would say their software is more experimental than most and never get BSODs or aything like that. It might be a corrupt HDD or a problem with the enclosure. There are programs that can scan HDD for bad sectors and cordon them off so the CPU doesn't touch them causing irregular events like the one you are describing. Backup first of course.

    Steps to determine if your subwoofer has anything wrong with it

    (1) Plug it in
    (2) Play music
    (3) Does it work?
    If Yes you should hear low end and muffled low-mids coming out of the sub when your ear is next to it. If No you should hear either nothing or distortion (crackles, static, clicking, popping).

    Its that simple. Its not a Cerwin Vega dual 12" sub box its something to just thicken out the weak middle end typical of laptop speakers. Don't expect your cup of joe to vibrate off your desk!

    Does anyone else have one with a slightly recessed touchpad on the right side, is there any functional defect with that? Also, the clicking seems to come right towards the center rather than the corners. Lastly, I have a small dent around my AC/power port which I imagine is because it takes a bit of force to pull this in and out...

    One more question: Do you guys get a lot of vibration with the speakers? Any way to reduce this?

    hi everyone! just purchased this bad boy from computer upgrade king. I have them set it up with 16gb and 256 SSD. I have owned laptops by compaq, hp, dell and eeepc, and my eeepc has been the most reliable, thats why I chose asus again for my laptop purchase. First impression, I really love the design! It is solid and sleek, not plasticky as most of the pc laptops out there, the illuminated asus logo on the lid adds a nice touch too. Although the design is mostly positive for me, I wish asus ditched the 10key,to give more space for regular size arrow keys and right-shift key. I don't like that I have to look down on my keyboard to press on the arrow keys as it is crammed and not seperated from the main keyboard, and the 10key is tiny, and button 5 do not have the raised line or dot, so it is still hard to key in the numbers without looking at the keyboard. Also the battery adapter is literally a brick lol. It's huge and heavy, cable is thick and its a 3 prong plug, so it is not as portable as the other laptops. Performance-wise, with the 16gb and the ssd, I get bootup time of 20sec. :) I don't do online gaming, but I am planning to use this for making hd movies and photo-editing. I haven't put it to test yet, but just loading heavy software like sony vegas, cs6, ms office, they all load really fast and no lag. Laptop is super quiet! And it doesn't get hot while watching hd movies/shows online.. unlike my gf's macbook pro (with ssd)! Some texts appear pixelated though and some texts are too small on Chrome. Speakers are loud and crisp! I have yet to watch a bluray movie on here, but the 1080p screen is impressive! Overall I am very happy with the purchase and I am hoping this investment will last me for several years!

    My annoyance right now is with the trackpad while typing. Cursor jumps around and accidentally clicks on things because of my palm touching the trackpad. It looks like Elantech has resolved this problem with their "Palm Tracking" feature but I do not have it on my trackpad settings. I want to find out which updated trackpad driver has this feature that is compatible with the n56.

    ^congrats. None of the elantech drivers from asus have that setting exposed. But you can change the "smart area" size to something smaller, and get better results. Or, you can edit the registry settings and get more of the settings for the driver exposed.

    run: regedit
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elantech\SmartPadDisplay\...
    -change values from 0 to 1 (this is the "visible in control panel" settings.
    -open the mouse settings->elantech panel.
    -edit more settings.

    The registry settings revert again after you close the mouse settings panel for some reason. So you need to edit it again later on.

    Latest elantech package can be found here.

    Thanks! Can't believe they don't have that feature available, yet it shows up on their troubleshooting page... confusing! I did email them yesterday regarding the issue. Thanks for the tips, I was playing around with the "smart area" setting last night, although I think it was a little better it is still significantly jumpy and sensitive.

    Sorry to be a chore I am wondering if anyone here has seen the speakers really vibrate the chassis, and if they've found a way to reduce this. Even at low volumes I get a fair amount of vibrations.

    Wow I also bought from computer king upgrade from Amazon. Had alot of GC to be used before they expired. Other than the slow shipping, they have a very good price.

    Thats great, I wish i had GC to use up!.... I originally was going to order from them through amazon but their modifications were limited (just the ram upgrade), so their customer rep suggested I order through their website. Yeah, I hear you about the slow shipping. They shipped it out 8 days after my order, and took a week to get to california via ground. Shipping cost was expensive too, with all the added fees like insurance and signature delivery... it came out to $25. Out of all the online stores I've found that offer new laptop modifications though, they have the best deals. Although I was hoping, I would also get the 750GB that originally came with the laptop (since that's included in the base price), they didn't include it. The other online store does.

    BTW, I've received a reply from asus support... unfortunately she didn't really resolve my issue:

    Dear valued customer,

    Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.

    Please reinstall touchpad driver from the link: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download Touchpad
    When you are typing, please press FN+F9 to lock touchpad. It is too sensitive.
    Then you could set in the touchpad control panel in the right corner of the desktop. You could adjust its speed.

    If you have another problem, please get contact with us ASAP.

    Best Regards,
    Carol

    Need the updated Elan driver that has the "Palm Tracking" feature. My palm keeps
    touching the touch pad which makes the cursor move around while I'm typing.
