    isn't i5 slower? it's cache is 3mb vs. the i7's 6mb i believe...correct if i'm wrong.

i think the i7 should be faster than the i5...............right?

No doubt, i7 should be faster than i5. But Asus is selling both the i5 (430M lowest model) and i7 (720QM) with same price !!!

another thing i was concerned about regarding this laptop was the heat....according to your read out, is that a normal amount of heat for the laptop or would it be better to go with the IC thermal compund on the CPU and GPU?

please let me know asap. thanks!

i don't think there are any touch-sensitive buttons..check out the video and you'll see there aren't any..

in my opinion, that's good because i have a dell studio and those buttons mess up all the time. they're more annoying than useful...

you do get the standard volume up/down, etc buttons though.

would you be able to tell me about the temperature read out earlier in this thread? are those normal temperatures and is there a risk of burning out the laptop during extended gameplay? should i get a special thermal compound or is that just a waste of money?

    thanks in advance!

Yes, when I saw the video I did not notice the touch sensitive multimedia buttons on the top of keyboard panel. But they (XoticPC) have added this in their features pages of N61JQ/N61JA. Seems like these 2 laptops are having same (may be minor changes) body/build of earlier N series laptops, but having different hardware components.

The earlier N61 series also does not have touch sensitive multimedia buttons, see the video of N61Vg:

    width='480' height="295"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Aj6INalxnWw&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0&hd=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Aj6INalxnWw&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0&hd=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width='480' height="295"></embed></object>

N61Vg and N61Jq almost identical except the JQ model has glass cover on the screen.

Yeh, I know earlier n series had also no touch sensitive multimedia buttons.
Seems XoticPC has wrong info on their features page like PNB has about 1.3 mp web cam instead of 2mp.

Really wish Asus would release a model of this notebook with a higher resolution screen than this. That's the only thing keeping me from dropping the money on this right now.

what do you need the higher resolution for? i checked out a 16" sony FW at Bestbuy and it had a very high resolution. in fact it was so high, you couldn't read anything on the screen without straining somewhat (and i wear glasses...)

i think that anything above 1280x800 is getting a bit impractical.

what would you use the higher res for anyway?

As for heat the system does not run very warm at all. IC Diamond is not required but for the small investment for IC Diamond IMO it is worth for it run as cool as possible. :)

I will confirm the wireless card in the morning :)

Resolution is very much a personal preference.

For me, WXGA+ should be a minimum on a 15.4" and up.

Well it really is a matter of preference really. There are lots of people like you, who prefer the lower resolution. I just enjoy the extra screen space and being able to enjoy full HD videos and other multimedia applications. Plus you can always increase the size of text is you feel the need.

Likewise, 1366x768 on 16" is wasted IMO, while G51 series can pull 1920x1080 for their 15.6" screen. More space to work = better. Not to mention you can go to lower resolution as well if your screen have high resolution to begin with. 1920x1080 can go down to 1366x768, but 1366x768 can't go to 1920x1080.

Unfortunately you also pay a premium going to 1920 res on a 15. Usually reserved to G series laptops that can go for up to 1800 bucks (unless you get it on a smokin good deal sale).

It wouldn't be nearly that much for Asus to include an option for a higher resolution screen for this laptop. Take Sony's F series laptop for example. The upgrade to a Full HD screen from the standard option is only $150, and that actually includes a better graphics card than standard too. Take the better GPU away and you're looking at around $100 more.

That's the same thing that's keeping me away from them. They don't have the graphics power I want, and the N61's don't have the screen I like. I'm leaning more and more toward a new G51. Waiting to see if the Newegg model, the G51Vx-x3a, gets refreshed first though. I can't afford the G51Jx unfortunately.

I'm in the exact same boat as you. I'm just gonna get the N61JQ likely. Screen size would be nice to have @ 1080P but I don't play a huge amount of games, and if I do I have one of 3 monitors I can plug it into if I dont like the resolution. I actually do worry about heat cause I would like to use it as a laptop, but some of these tempts people are getting (100+) kinda rules that out...tabletop :D

I'll see what I can do but the GPU-Z can't read the GPU temperature for some reason.

better thermal compound does help reduce the temperature but it's not required for all notebooks, adding thermal compound only take one day extra.

I am also concerned about throttling issues, as it has only a 90W adapter.

When can we expect confirmation on this?

ps- if you (gentech) started shipping 1/27, then people should start getting it in a few days, say by 1/30, right?

Will the Intel 5300 Wireless be offered as an upgrade option?

Does it have the necessary three antennas or can they be installed?

Also what is the accurate weight of the laptop? Asus has been publishing different weights for the same laptops recently (especially the G73).

i was told by an xoticpc rep that its not worth getting the 5300...the laptop or w\e has 2 antennas whereas the 5300 uses 3, so the atheros would be fine.
