i was eying the N61JQ, but wanted a higher resolution screen. then i ran across the N71JQ, and was stoked that for a bit more i can have the same machine with a better screen and some more hdd space. then i saw they dropped in a lower specced card for pretty much the same machine. is there any rational behind this? frustrating.

So wait, is it better or not than the N71Vn-A1?

Definately better than the N71VN. I was waiting for that one at first, but it was taken off the market in Holland after less than a month, to make way for the updated N71JQ.

The first supplier seems to be delivering since today, 11 in stock ( hardware.info)
For specs, take a look at this. It's in Dutch, but you should manage.

    Side notice:
I do wonder though: why did Asus equip the N61JQ with 8GB of memory and it's higher entertainment brother N71JQ with only 4GB? Makes you wonder whether a new update is due soon...

ASUS has updated and corrected recent specifications they supplied to their dealers that the video card for this machine is now the 5730. It is not using both cards.

No, they are both 4GB, upgradable to 8GB if wanted.
