My son was home for the Holidays and brought his laptop with him - it wasn't booting. I told him to leave it with me and I'd see what I could do. Anyhow, after searching the web and trying all of the suggested fixes - nothing has produced results. What it does on power up is just show the "Asus" splash screen for a few seconds, then the cursor goes to the upper left corner and flashes - that;s it! I have tried all of the key depressing "fixes" - the F2, Esc, F8, F10, etc while pressing the power button. No Good! I have searched for a disassembly guide to help me open it up to try the "CMOS" short method or to remove the 2032 CR battery. Those searches have produced zilch! Does anyone have any suggestions or information that could help me resolve my problem? Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Maybe try an F9 restore. Do you have the owners manual? A restore will wipe the drive, so proceed carefully. There is a disassembly guide you can probably find in the n71jq thread. It's called N71VN Series Chapter 02-v1.0.pdf . I can't attached the document because there is a 2MB limit to posts and the pdf is 3.8. You might also try removing the battery for 10 minutes or so. Not a CMOS reset but might help.

Things to try to troubleshoot a POST problem. After doing each try powering on the machine.

0.) Remove AC power and unplug or disconnect the battery for 30+ seconds to reset the embedded controller
1.) Remove all hard drives and optical drives
2.) Try only one stick of RAM at a time
3.) Try on AC power without a battery
4.) Try on battery power without AC plugged in
5.) Try warm booting by hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL after the splash screen

Sometimes resetting the CMOS battery will do the trick, but it requires a bit of disassembly and is absolutely not worth trying until you've run through the basic stuff above. The CMOS battery looks like it's underneath the left hand side of the palmrest. See this YouTube video at 7m30s:

If this gets you nowhere it could be the result of flashing a BIOS update gone wrong or a hardware failure.
