Hello - I'm looking at the Asus Q301 LA at Best Buy and didn't see anything posted about this model here. Has anyone looked at it, or any thoughts on it? Primarily will be used for college commuting, writing papers, web surfing, and so forth, so the main considerations are portability, battery life, durability/reliability. The model is Model: Q301LA-BHI5T02, currently priced at $599.

It's a Haswell I5, 4GB RAM, 500GB 5400 RPM HDD, no ODD. No overwhelming specs, but it doesn't need to be that for the price. The build quality seems to be very solid.

My understanding is that the "Q" designation identifies a model that's only sold at Best Buy, but this is essentially the S301LA, which I also don't see anything about here.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on it!

I had a very unhappy experience with this machine; I bought it for a local teenager (at Best Buy), who rather promptly managed to crack the touch screen - the cracked touch screen then interfered with the other input device, the touch pad, thus defeating functionality; - and another teenager nearby was able to disable the touch screen, by software, thus enabling the touch pad - and so we had limited functionality

I called Asus to fix this machine and they said to send it to California, I am in NYC, so I asked for a local authorized service center, which was identified, a few blocks from me, walk-in, so I called them (NYC) and learned that touch screens may only be fixed in California

So I called Asus and asked them to authorize the local service center to, um, provide service and Asus said the locals didn't have the parts so I said send them the parts and Asus said the locals were not authorized so I said authorize them, and they said take it up to an escalation within Asus. I am promised a phone call.....

So I told them I was 'imposed' upon, *stronger* language, in fact, just so's folks know

BTW, when I gave then the micro-print serial number and model Q301LA, they responded with S301 - duh - NOT Q301LA - but now I know why; the Asus website knew that my s/n was a Q301

Best Buy took it a little more seriously, they said he would send my complaint from Best Buy to asus
